Adarsh stations will be stations that will have basic facilities such as drinking water, adequate toilets, catering services, waiting rooms. In the city, they will be Andheri, Bandra, Bhayandar, Borivali, Charni Road, Churchgate, Dadar, Dahanu Road, Goregaon, Malad, Marine Lines, Mira Road, Mumbai Central (local), Naigaon, Okha, Santacruz, Saphale, Vangaon and Virar.

  Promising some respite to Borivli commuters in the next two months, the new general manager of Western Railway, R N Verma, in his first official interaction with the press on Friday said a new platform, 6A, would come up on the east side of the station. A proposal to this effect has already been sent to the Railway Board and will be pursued by WR, he informed.

“Borivli commuters have met me and their problems are genuine. We have approached the BMC and MMRDA for certain developmental works. In the next two months the situation would get better,” Verma said.

Platform 6A would be will be used for both long distance and suburban services. Moreover, the road currently adjoining the station near platform 6 would be pushed eastward to accommodate a new station building as well as a 15-coach platform would come up. The cost of construction of platform 6A would be Rs 15 crore.

Following the recent Borivli agitation, WR officials said the BMC had been requested to widen the narrow approach roads at platform 7 to enable BEST buses to stop there. MMRDA has also been asked to extend the skywalk from the east to the west of the station. There would also be a landing from the road-over-bridge to platform 8.

Verma also announced that from Saturday, 36 trains would be converted from 9-car to 12-car, taking the number of 12-coach services to 685 from 649 at present. Of this, 32 trains will be from Borivli to Churchgate, 2 from Borivli to Dadar and 2 from Churchgate to Bandra.

Verma also spoke of a Rs 97.5-crore integrated security plan for the city’s suburban services based on the BOOT model.

“Security is top priority,” he said, especially in the aftermath of 26/11. The security plans include 2000 CCTV surveillance cameras on stations, X-ray baggage scanners, explosive vapor detectors and bomb disposal equipment.

Regarding other development in the suburban section, Verma said 12 new platforms would come up due to the quadrupling of tracks on the Borivli-Virar sector. There would also be four new FOBs at Dahisar, Bandra Terminus, Naigaon and Vile Parle, besides 8 new booking offices and improved ticketing systems. Suburban tickets through mobiles will start shortly as also GoMumbai cards, he said. Toilets at various stations were being renovated, he informed.
