Dandiya in Mumbai

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

We are in the middle of Navratri 2008 and Dandiya is the biggest things for young and old in Mumbai Suburbs. As always Falguni Pathak is the queen of Dandiya in Mumbai. She has been able to carve out an excellent niche for herself and Mumbaikars cant stop saying Falguni rocks!!

DNA in their article recently talks about all the singers this Navratri” But while the Dandiya queen - as she is popularly known - is still going strong, there are many talented youngsters waiting in the wings to prove their mettle, and maybe even usurp her throne.

After Falguni Pathak, the next person that comes to mind is Devang Patel,” says Amit Sana, the runner up of Indian Idol (Season 1), who finds it difficult to imagine the festival without the celebrated performer. “The key is to be innovative. Given a chance, maybe I, too, can make it,” he says.

Debojit Dutta, a participant in the SaReGaMaPa Challenge 2009, shares the same views as Sana. “Falguni will rule the Dandiya roost for the next few years, but I’m hoping that one day, I’ll be able to step in.”

Kaushik Deshpande, another SaReGaMaPa participant, says, “No matter what the others come up with, for me, Falguni Pathak is number one. Nobody can replace her.”

Even the DJs bow down to Pathak’s magic. DJ Megha feels that Falguni Pathak has got the energy and knows exactly how to work the audience. “Falguni has a stable position and Dandiya is her forte. She has carved a niche for herself and will be there for a long time,” says Megha.

Like every year Dandiya 2008 is the time when people come out in all their glory and make it special for all. Dance Classes are arranged all over the city to teach Garbha and Dandiya. Shiamak Davar is one of the many dance classes that teaches Dandiya.

Times of India gives in their article gives make up tips for dandiya 2008

Eyeshadows Choose an eye shadow to compliment your clothing. If you’re wearing a blue blouse, choose a nice blue shadow as your base, blending it over your eyelid, up to your brow at the outer side of your eyelids. Now, choose a nice complimentary purple to add to the eyelid only. Use a darker blue in the crease of your eyelid. Use a tiny amount of white in the centre at the eyelash level to give highlights.
Eye shadows come in a variety of colours and even in glitters. Glitters are ok if you’re in a ‘party mood’. Also, they can be fun to wear when you’re young. Glitter and shiny shadows brings out the aging in eyes, so be careful. Use powder shadows. They blend well with a tiny brush, do not run and stay on well.

Eye liners and mascaras Liners can be liquids or pencils. Both work well. Using liquid on the top eyelid and pencil on the bottom lid is easier. During the day, and when you’re not working, use tones of browns. In the evenings when you go out, or if you are working, use blacks. Blacks make eyes look larger, hence prettier. Use the liquid at the top of your eyelashes. Make a very fine line, making sure it blends to your lash. If you want to make your eye look wider, take this line out to the sides of your eyes, but not too far. Use the pencil on top of your bottom eyelid. Hold your bottom eyelid down with one finger as you apply the line with the pencil. Heating the pencil tip slightly works better. But do not hold pencil in the fire flame, just pass it over.

Blush While choosing a blush, make sure it is not too bold! Use a blush that will compliment your foundation and skin tone. Use it on your cheekbones. Start with a brush, just a finger width from your nose bridge. Blend it over your cheekbone, from front to back.Use an application that is just a highlight to your face.

Lipsticks and lip liners Lipsticks can be used in any colour you wish. We all have our favourites. But do stay away from bright reds! In order to make your lipstick last all day, use the lip pencil (liner) over all areas of your lips. This is an undercoat. Pencils do not wear off as fast as the lipstick. Be sure to use the same colour of pencil as lipstick. For lining your lips, use a couple shades darker than your lipstick.”

One more locations to go for Dandiya:

Lokhandwala Club, Andheri (W) is arranging dandiya on all the nine days of Navratri. Eighteen musicians will be playing  live on a huge set and Bollywood singers like Shaan, Sadhana Sargam, Sukhvinder Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Vaishali Samant, Vinod Rathod, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Shilpa Rao, Naresh Iyer and many others have come together to regale audiences. The event organizers are using a 45,000-watt sound system. This type of music system is being used in Mumbai for the first time according to them!!

Bollywood is using Dandiya and Navratri to promote their movies, Abhisekh Bachchan is promoting Drona and Himesh Reshamiya is doing his rounds of Radio Channels to promote his upcoming Karzzzz, the government goes ahead and put entertainment tax on Dandiya and Sankalp Daniya organizers are planning to make their own music as they don’t want to pay royalty to T-Series and other music labels.

So in all the security cover and the restriction of closing at 10 pm the Dandiya Navratri 2008 celebrations continue in Mumbai.

Navratri 2008

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Navratri – Longest Indian festival of nine nights.

Navratri means Nine Nights dedicated to the devi Durga maa, the godess of power and energy. Navratri falls in the month of Septembet – October (Ashvin Sud from 1-9). No other hindu festival is celebrated for such a long period of nine days.

On the very first day of Navratras, people prepare a small bed of mud in their Pooja Room and sow barley seeds on it. After 9/10 days the shoots are about 4 inches long and after the pooja, these seedlings are pulled out to be given to devotees as a blessing from god.

The initial days of Navratri are dedicated to Devi Durga. Devi Durga maa is the goddess of energy and power. Kumari, Parvati and Kali (3 manifestations of Devi Durga) are also worshiped. Kumari represent the child, Parvati the young girl and Kali the matured woman. They are 3 different phases of womanhood.

Devi Laxmi maa – the godess of peace and prosperity,  is worshiped during 4th to 6th day of Navratri.

Devi Saraswati – the godess of knowledge and art is worshiped on the fifth day – Lalit Panchami. Also on Ashtami, ie 8th day of Navratri,  Saraswati maa is worshiped to acquire spiritual knowledge.

On Mahanavmi this colourful festival comes to an end with Kanya Pooja. Nine young girls representing nine forms of goddess Durga are worshiped. Their feet are washed and they are offered food, new clothes.

The 10th day is VijayaDashmi. The idols of Goddess Durga are taken on a procession to be dipped in a water body. This day is also known and celebrated as Dussehra – to mark the return of Lord Ram back to Ayodhya after 14 years in exile.

Here is a color list representing the different aspects of Devi.

Oct 1st - Tara - Orange

Oct 2nd - Shorashi - Yellow
