Antaheen-Bengali cinema at its contemporary best!

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Bengali cinema at its contemporary best!

The release of the Rahul Bose starrer Antaheen was a resounding success and as reviews go this Bengali masterpiece is already getting rave reviews. The story is set in contemporary Kolkata, with the sights and sounds having being convincingly captured by the director, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhry. The duration of the film is 2 hours and it is in Bengali with English sub-titles.

This is Chowdhry’s second film, the first one Anuranan, also having gathered critical acclaim. The director is being labeled a fresh, new, sensitive voice in Bengali cinema, with many people flocking to watch his movies. The movie brings out the urban angst of people living in metros and captures the spirit of Kolkata with refreshing panache. The couple, a police officer, played by Rahul Bose and a journo, played by Radhika Apte, give the movie a new lease of life. The two are busy urban citizens during the day, but come alive as cyber buddies at night. The complexity of a real versus virtual relationship comes alive as the director deals with the aspect of love and relationship in the virtual world. Sharmilla Tagore, who plays Rahul’s aunt also can’t help out in the complex relationship, as she has been single all her life and has no means to get the two together.

The director captures the tension of an urban setting, the pulls and pushes of a career and urban loneliness with creativity and a mostly believable tale to tell. This is probably Chowdhry’s attempt to put Kolkata in the urban light, taking away from the rural image that it enjoyed till now. So, if you’re fond of Rahul Bose and like his experimental style, then go watch this movie, not only for Kolkata, but also for the cinematography and some convincing acting by the starcast.

Laze around this Sunday watching Ratatouille

Review of Ratatouille

Animation films are a must watch and I don’t miss out on any new ones that hit the stands. Although Ratatouille is an old one, I would still like to write about it. It was a resounding success when it hit the screens, not only with children, but also adults. The storyline by Jan Pinkava is an absolute winner. It tells the tale of a cooking genius rat who instructs a local boy to dish out winning recipes and pulverize the competition. The voice-overs of most of the artists are immaculate. The music score is engaging and I just can’t understand how the director went into the head of a rat, its trials and tribulations, and came out victorious.

The special FX are mind-blowing and the result is that you don’t want to blink, in case you lose out on a trick or treat. Patton Oswalt as Remy the rat and Lou Romano as the evil Linguini come out absolute winners. The whole plot unfurls around the genius rat at gastronomy and his desire to join catering school and emerge an award-winning chef of international repute.

Ratatouille comes in the super successful league and is Disney’s best production in recent years. You also can’t miss out the Shrek series, Horton hears a Who, Ice Age, Ants and Animal Farm (The animated version).

The best part of the movie is the detail in which the lives of rats are revealed. The rat family with the gross brother and the whole rat fraternity are an absolute delight to watch. Actually, the rats resemble humans in a lot of ways and their struggles are similar to the struggles of humans. Their values also reflect the struggles human face in their choices to emerge victorious despite the odds against them. It could probably be said of humans that we live a rat’s life! The movie is a 2 hour treat that no one should miss out. In fact, get a DVD of it and watch re-runs just to marvel at the genius of the entire Ratatouille team.

Face of Soul

A solo exhibition by a promising artist Niladrishekhar Majumder from Kolkata, presented by Pradarshak this week.  Majumder’s works revolves mostly around thoughts and emotions as he converts them into symbolic swerves from where the human form transforms to everyday objects. His works use blues, greens, crimsons and ochres in combination to vie for your attention amidst a vibrant palette. Each work of his tells a tale and spells energy and radiance. This current exhibition titled ‘Face of Soul’ showcases his semi-abstract works and is definitely worth a look.

Bollywood release Straight - Now, that’s what I call marketing!!

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

I’m on several wedding sites and I do get some good proposal every now and then. One of the better ones was on Bharat Matrimony by a person called Pinu Patel. I was thrilled; he even had a personal, swish web-site!! Then, to my surprise, Pinu Patel was on You Tube talking about his several crushes. And then to my thorough amusement, I got a mail stating that there was no one called Pinu Patel and that it was just a promotional campaign for the movie Straight- The Film, starring Gul Panag and Vinay Pathak and a host of other stars. The movie is apparently about the search for love and a partner!!

I was inadvertently a part of a publicity campaign for the film! Now, that’s what I call marketing and I am even writing about it, so more word-of-mouth campaigning and all for free!!! And all this when I’m pursuing an MBA and have just completed my Marketing study!! This can’t be just coincidence.

My immediate reaction was of disbelief. I couldn’t understand how they could target a single person for a publicity campaign, but as it turned out, it was one helluva gimmick.

I must congratulate the marketing team for this novel approach. They probably thought I would go about telling all my friends about Pinu Patel!! But I was a lot smarter than that!! But, nonetheless, I will definitely go watch the movie. But I really need to know why and how they got my profile access on BM. They actually created a mock profile of PP, filled in all the personal details and took everyone for a jolly good ride. Very clever, I must say. And for all you other sitting ducks out there, why not participate in all the promotional activities by logging onto www.straightthefilm.com. I’m sure you’ll land up somewhere. Imagine a meeting or session with Vinay Pathak and for the boys a date with Gul Panag!! Hey, let’s join the joy ride!!
