Do away with medicines - follow Aurveda’s law of Health
How can we expect to be healthy when we are not having proper food. We think that medicines will take care of us. If we are taking 2-3 tonics, 3-4 other medicines, tablets of different vitamins and enzymes and variety of other tablets, then everything will be fine. Food is of secondary importance. Dear friends we must understand the importance of food. Ayurveda says health stands on the table which has three legs, food, rest and life of morality. It does not say medicines, treatments and hospitalization etc. One verse in ayurveda books says- ‘if one follows the laws of health, then what is the need of medicines and if one does not follow the laws, then how can medicines be useful.
So it is certain that even for the efficacy of the medicines we must follow the laws of health. They are more important and medicines are secondary. And today the picture is exactly opposite. Consumption of medicines is increasing by leaps and bounds. Latest information points out that the use of medicines per head in USA is much more than any other country of the world. In this case a doubt arises in the mind regarding the health status of the world’s leading nation. Is consumption of so many medicines everyday a sign of good or bad health? Every one must think on this issue.
According to me and my teachers, minimum need of the medicines is sign of good health. If we look back in the past and remember how much was the consumption of medicines in previous generations. It was negligible. Why? The answer is very clear. The earlier generations were following the laws of nature, laws of health very well. I am not talking about only India but it was there every where all around the world. The life was moving at the speed of nature, in tune with the nature, with the laws of nature. The cycle of day and the cycle of night had their own significance. But in this jet age, cyber age, the day and the night have lost their identity, they have simply became one.
Today the picture is changing. Instead of allopathic medicines we are consuming ayurvedic medicines but unfortunately the size of the prescription is same. So it is clear that until we are not going in tune with nature we are going to be dependent on medicines.
We are talking about the laws of eating. Keep them in mind and check whether you are eating more or less. Today’s mind set is that everyone thinks that they are eating more. In many cases they eat less and still feel that they are eating too much. On one hand they feel extreme weakness, no energy at all, giddiness and on other hand they are undergoing various tests, taking dozens of medicines but not ready to increase the quantity of food. What to do? Please be aware about overeating and also about under eating.
In this article we discussed about the laws of health and how important it is to follow them. The modern science now a days speaks about the lifestyle and how important (it is) to change our lifestyle. These laws are nothing but the lifestyle manual for us. And if you want a real good health, there is no alternative than to follow the nature’s path. Once again remember the three legs of a health table: food, rest and a life of morality.
When to eat ? What to eat ? How much to eat ?
It is very important to maintain the quality and quantity of food as per the demand of our body, that is as per our hunger and it is equally important to have food at a proper time. Feeling hungry means a signal from the body to have food. It is the request made to us by our body. It is a demand for fuel, body needs energy, body needs food. And our duty is to fulfill the need.
What will happen if we ignore it? As discussed earlier we will experience all the signs similar to when we eat less, like fatigue, weakness, acidity, gases, aches and pains etc. If we continue this habit of ignoring the signals of hunger , then we are heading towards some severe problems. And what we do at other extreme is we eat food when we do not feel hungry. This will show all the signs similar to when we eat more, like heaviness, lethargy, indigestion, stickiness to bowels etc. However when we eat on time, that is when body demands food ,we experience satisfaction. I am sure you must have realized this phenomenon several times.
As small troubles lead us to bigger ones, one should not ignore the symptoms that we experience when we consume food at wrong time. Instead be mindful of them. Today the modern science may not be talking about them, ayurveda may not be able to give some scientific proof about it but let your experience be your master. Be aware of your feelings, experiences when you follow and when you do not follow the laws.
This is the way to health. This is the way to avoid ill health. And today this is the most difficult thing to follow. If a person is advised to eat food at proper time, either he will laugh at the advisor or there will be a big question mark on his face. For many of us, it is just impossible to have a proper meal at the proper time.
