New Year Celebrations

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Every year the same thing happens. The New Year comes and goes and people go crazy asking each other how they celebrated. For us, this year was special, and we did what other families don’t even think of. We celebrated at a temple, in the midst of thundering chanting and prayers and brought in the new year on a positive, devotional note.

It was an exceptional experience. Loud, clear chants rendered through the air. People were dressed in all their finery. People seated in neat rows offered obeisance to the great Lord Vishnu. There was harmony abundant as each person’s voice rose in a rapturous chant to meet with the rest. And what a crescendo it raised. The devout ones had tears in their eyes and the not so devout couldn’t stop clicking. The entire ashram was filled with the unified, melodious chanting of the Lord’ 1000 names. For once, people left all their doubts, fears, negativities aside and united in the love of the lord.

And the head of the whole lot inspired us with his devotion, witty observations and melodious renditions to the various deities of the Hindu pantheon. People were overjoyed, so much so that they started hugging each other at the midnight hour. There were musical instruments, singing, chanting, all for a higher purpose, which everyone seemed to have a vision of. And we brought in the New Year as a congregation, for once, united in our longing for the Lord, with all differences and inhibitions being dropped.

Such was the magic that the words of the poems stuck on in the mind even 2, 3 days later. There was joy, abandonment and cheer as we all bowed our heads in unison to the chants of the Lord and the beats of the drums.
