Standee’ buses on 25 routes soon

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Now, you can expect more breathing space in buses, lesser pollution and traffic near station areas, commercial and residential complexes in the coming week. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking plans to start “standee” buses on 25 routes to supplement point-to-point feeder bus services.

Standee buses have higher standing-to-seating ratio. Each of these buses has a seating capacity of 30 and can accommodate 93 people standing. Regular buses have 53 seats and space for 13 standing passengers but in reality, over 100 people fight for space on each bus.

Standee buses have seats placed against the sides and at the back with the aisle being wider for more standing passengers.

The routes have also been chosen to cover the heavy loading points. Focusing on point-to-point services, these buses will be used for short trips where commuters will not have to travel standing for too long.

“Most of these services ply during peak hours when buses carry a heavy load. These services will help in clearing crowds faster and result in lesser dependence on autorickshaws and taxis,” a BEST official said.

The service was started on an experimental basis three months ago with eight buses on three routes: CST to NCPA, Bandra station to BKC and Andheri (East) to SEEPZ. These services have proved to be extremely popular.
