Munna and Curcuit director Rajkumar Hirani finally moves outside of his fabulous characters to take on the Indian education system. The director has confirmed that this film is an original script, and not based on Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone. Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi make for an interesting cast, but we’re all just waiting to see Hirani bat again.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra became one of the most respected directors in the industry with his apathy-shattering Rang De Basanti a couple of years ago, and we’ve had to wait three years to see what he does next. This one is based on a  colourful, mad part of Delhi called Delhi-6, and stars Abhishek Bachchan opposite Sonam Kapoor. We’re expecting a lot.

5)My Name Is Khan

Myname is Khan

Director : Karan Johar

Producer :Karan Johar, Hiroo YashJohar

Cast  : Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, R.Madhavan

Releasing on : Diwali 2009

Karan Johar seems to completely have dropped the K, and the subject matter for his next Shah Rukh Khan starer is intriguing, to say the least: Khan plays a man targeted at an airport because of his last name and his religion, and that discrimination gives rise to many a question. Then again, the film’s been written by Shibani Bhatija, who wrote Fanaa and Kidnap, so maybe we shouldn’t go in expecting answers.

6) Kambakkht Ishq

kambakkht Ishq

Director : Sabir Khan

A romantic comedy about an Indian stuntman who takes Hollywood by storm but cannot find true love. Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor star in this massive budget film. 7) Alladin

Alladin

Sujoy Ghosh’s film has been in production for the longest time. Ritesh Deshmukh stars as Alladin while Amitabh Bachchan takes on the role of the genie in this rather zany take on the original. The film is a special effects spectacular and by now, we just want to see what in the world has taken this long to make.

8) Wake Up Sid

Wake up Sid

Director : Ayaan Mukherjee

Producer : Karan Johars Dharma Production

Cast : Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma

Releasing on : April 2009

Director Ayaan Mukherji makes his debut with this film that promises to be interesting simply because of its unconventional pairing. Ranbir Kapoor, pinup boy-to-be and current heart-throb of the masses, cast opposite indie queen Konkona Sensharma. We’re waiting to see how these two very different genre-representatives get along, and the title sounds fun too.

9) Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Director : Raj kumar Santoshi

Cast : Upen Patel, Darshan Jariwala, Asrani, Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor while Salman Khan will give special appearance.

Katrina Kaif stars opposite Ranbir Kapoor in this film by Raj Kumar Santoshi. That’s right, the socially aware blockbuster-maker is back with a film that sounds pretty darned unusual. The casting is a bit of a coup, the kind of casting that leaves these kids out to fend for themselves without being able to fall back on a massive banner or Akshay Kumar. Salman Khan, however, does make an appearance.

10) Chatur Singh Two Star

Director : Ajay Chandok

Cast : Sanja Dutt, Amisha Patel, Suresh Menon

Produced by : Mohamed Aslam

Releasing on : May 2009

The film is partially inspired from Pink Panther, but the setting is definitely very Indian. Dutt has great comic timing and for the first time, will be seen in an out-and-out comic role. But the film’s writer Rumi Jaffrey begs to differ and says that Chatur Singh is not based on Pink Panther. Talking about the similarities in the posters of both films, he revealed that since they were unable to get Sanjay Dutt for a shoot, they decided to use a cartoon character instead. Sanju’s character in the film is based somewhat on Inspector Clouseau. Apparently Sanju loved the script when he heard it. He has watched all the Pink Panther movies and is a great fan of Inspector Clouseau.

Heroes and RoadSide Romeo

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Roadside Romeo and Heroes are releasing today and if news stories are to believed, they are garnering a cheerful response in terms of advance bookings despite releasing just three days before Diwali. However, some reports say, “Reports are not good for both ‘Roadside Romeo‘ and ‘Heroes‘ and there are less expectations as these are releasing just days before Diwali which is not a normally good period for movie business,”. The trade feels that they haven’t even been promoted well so their chances are slim for faring well at the box office. Also next weeks big releases of Fashion, Golmaal Returns and EMI will impact these movies. Fashion, Golmaal Returns and EMI hit the screens a day after Diwali and have been promoted aggressively as per the trade.

However, given that last weeks release Karzzz is not doing very well at the box office, Roadside Romeo and Heroes will get some advantage. Written and directed by debutant Jugal Hansraj, Roadside Romeo is India’s first ever three-dimensional (3D) mainstream animation project being co-produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF) Studio and Hollywood studio Walt Disney Co. It has been visualised, executed and delivered by a 150-member team of Tata group’s Tech arm Tata Elxsi and has voiceovers from Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Javed Jaffrey among others. The movie narrates a light-hearted tale of a pet dog named Romeo (voiced by Saif) who is left by his owners on the mean streets of Mumbai where he meets Laila (voiced by Kareena) and encounters with Charlie Anna (voiced by Javed).

Heroes, on the other hand, is a multi-starrer big film co-written and directed by Sameer Karnik and Aseem Arora. Loosely based on the cult classic “The Motorcycles Diaries”, the film is about a road trip of two guys - Sohail Khan and Vatsal Seth with patriotism as the theme. Other big stars in the film include Salman Khan, Preity Zinta, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Dino Morea, Mithun Chakraborty, Amrita Arora and Riya Sen. In terms of budget, where in producers Samir Karnik, Bharat Shah and Vikas Kapoor have, reported, invested around Rs.20 Crores in “Heroes”, YRF refused to divulge any details regarding Roadside Romeo. Jugal Hansraj is having butterflies in the stomach as the release date is approaching as he is quoted in some interviews but is sure people will like the movie. According to Jugal, We haven’t made this film to teach or preach anything or to compete with anyone. It’s a fun-filled movie for both kids and adults and has been made for them to have a good time. Jugal, lets hope this experiment with animation works and the magic of Walt Disney impacts us Indians also.

Heroes, we hear, will be a completely different movie. In an interview Samir Karnik says Talking about the film Samir said, ” Heroes is a road trip movie which is a journey of certain characters. It takes them from place to place and formulates the story of the film. There is a hero inside everyone. It is only one moment or experience that makes us realize how we can make a difference or think about our country. Heroes is not a war film. It is not even a patriotic film. It is a fun and entertaining film.” Also, watch out for the music of Heroes.

A Bandra Man named Naseer

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Naseeruddin Naseeruddin Naseer Nasiruddin NasiruddinShah

“A Wednesday” was one of the few films to catch the viewer’s attention this year. We have two men to thank for this - Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher - both Bollywood veterans. While many big banner films met their doom at the box office, this small film worked chiefly due to the performances by both these veterans. Naseeruddin Shah (I prefer calling him as Naseer) has been giving one classy performance after the other, right from the 70’s. Sadly he has not been appreciated as much as he should be by the Indian fans. He has a wide repertoire of performances that any Bollywood actor would want to be a part of. I would just like to list a few of his important movies.

“Aakrosh” was one of his earliest films and gave him a chance to show us his fine acting skills. On the other hand “Chakra” had him playing a lovable rogue in the slums. Anyone who wants to learn acting can definitely pick up some tips from this film, on how to play a character in a totally convincing manner. The conflict of emotions and the division of love for a wife and an illegitimate son are displayed so finely by Naseer in “Masoom”. Also check Naseer in “Jalwa”. His performance as Inspector Kapil was full of raw energy and totally convincing. He was also able to surprise all his fans with a well toned body in the same. That calls for true dedication to one’s craft.

You also admire him as the patient, understanding husband in “Woh 7 Din”. “Katha” was a gem of a movie, where Naseer played the role of a shy guy to perfection. You feel elated when he is able to win the girl’s hand in marriage at the end of the film. “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” gave him an opportunity to play the role of a loser to the highest degree. This film is a cult comedy film for people of all ages.
Is there anyone who has played a drunkard as lovably as he has done in “Iqbal”? Finally “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” had Naseer in a small cameo. Throughout the film, he is confined in a photograph, yet he was able to get a smile on my face with his acting. Truly this guy rocks, and I look forward to every performance of his in the near future.
