Citizens Take Charge movement

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Hundreds of citizens from Khar, Bandra, Santa Cruz and Juhu gathered at the St Joseph’s School auditorium on Sunday morning to transform “passive concern into active involvement” in the wake of the terror attacks.

They launched the Citizens Take Charge movement, which promises to “be the change that one wishes to see”.
These people decided not to play the blame game. They do not want to point fingers at the system that had failed or at politicians who were inept. “One thing good that has come about following the terror strikes is that we seem to have suddenly woken up from a deep slumber. But it is time to take charge, not as a spectator democracy but an active participatory democracy,” said Shyama Kulkarni, chairperson H-West Federation.

Kulkarni added that this was possible only if citizens exercised their right to vote. “Our duty is not over once we cast our vote. We have to follow it up constantly by using the Right to Information (RTI). We should remember that we are all shareholders of India and we need to protect the shares so that India does not fall,” she added.

Human Chain in Mumbai

SAY NO TO TERROR AND WAR! SAY NO TO VIOLENCE!

We, the people of Mumbai, from all walks of life, of all faiths, all linguistic groups, all ages, will express our commitment to peace by coming out on the streets and holding hands in unity from 12 noon to 12.15 pm. on Friday the 12th of December, 2008.

We, the people of Mumbai, who have seen hatred and bloodshed in our city, pledge that we will not give in to terror and to those who preach war, violence, hatred and intolerance. We undertake to keep Mumbai a city that is peaceful and united. We commit to building a world based on the principles of tolerance and peace, equality and justice

MUMBAI: A human chain from Taj Mahal hotel in Colaba to Vasai-Virar is being planned by various citizens’ groups on December 12 to denounce terrorism.

Over 100 organizations, including trade unions, student bodies and peace activists, mahila mandals and minority and human rights organisations, will participate in it.

From the city’s southern tip touching the Nariman House and Taj Mahal Hotel__two of the venues of 26/11 terror attack__to the far-off suburbs of Vasai and Virar, `Mumbai for Peace’ will span across the city in a human chain from 12 noon to 12.15 pm. Though creating human chains to show solidarity to a cause is not a new idea, this is for the first time that so many organisations, with disparate concerns and ideologies, will come together against a common evil, terrorism.

“People react to crises in two ways. There are knee-jerk reactions and long-term strategies. The human chain is part of a long-term initiative to fight terrorism and establish peace,” said freedom fighter and veteran trade union leader Shanti Patel.

Even some legal eagles will join the initiative. “The civil society must work as a pressure group to keep our government on toes. People are angry. But anger should not blur our vision. The terrorists attacked not just some of our famous landmarks; they attacked our values. We have to guard against the forces which help breed terrorism,” said advocate Yusuf Muchchalla. He also emphasised that peace could not be established without social justice.

Dolphy D’Souza of the Bombay Catholic Sabha warned against the dangers of demonising a community for the sins of a handful of its misguided members. “The human chain is just one of our programmes aimed at strengthening the country’s unity and integrity. The political class has failed us repeatedly. The latest example is how they took three days to choose a new chief minister and his deputy in the state. But we have not lost hope in the civil society,” said D’Souza.

Peace activist Jatin Desai clarified that the organisations participating in the human chain don’t support military action against Pakistan. “War is not a solution. It will only create more terrorists. We have to mobilise the global opinion against the monsters holed up in Pakistan,” said Desai who also emphasised that the people-to-people dialogue was a more effective weapon than conventional weapons of war, in establishing peace.

THE AWAKENING!

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Glued to my TV set right from 10.30 pm till TAJ was rescued I would just surf channels and would be surrounded by all possible newspapers trying to gather news about all my known ones.

Finally Sunday was a SUNDAY. I relaxed a little .Then came in my feeling of “INDIANISM” I stood up from my sofa and paid homage to my Police Force, Commandos, and all the people who died fighting for us and who had to given up their lives as their was no way of protection and their fate was decided. All this week I remained where I was feeling lost and sad and definitely not myself, and then of course why should I not play the famous “BLAME GAME” . I played that and believe me felt better and better. Then there was a spark inside me that made me think about the terrorists. I sat down to analyze what compelled them to take this huge step to end their lives as well as take so many lives at this young age. Of course the simple answer was CIRCUMSTANCES. Be it poverty, family problems, lack of education no job etc. etc. etc. and the list continues. Then I suddenly thought of my child and then the underprivileged children and the delinquents……….GOSHHH… A chill ran down my spine, they are so vulnerable! Look around us ..  What environment are we giving them. These children will do anything to make ends meet. Pick them up at a raw age stuff them up with hatred and make them rebellious and you have a Terrorist! SIMPLE!!

Droplets of sweat showed up on my forehead and I thanked the terrorist and got up.

THANK YOU TERRORIST!  I said: For making me realize that today if I don’t get up and raise my voice against corruption and know my rights and duty towards my nation I will never be able to feel secure tomorrow .Now I demand clarification , I want to know where all my hard earned  money goes in the name of tax for my well being. Why do I not enjoy the same rights the Netas do, I feel I work harder than them!

Actually I never gave a thought out of my busy schedule to sit down and think what is happening around me. I would simply shrug things off my shoulders and say “These netas are bloody chors” and that’s all, my job was done and would feel happy about it. BUT Today my happiness is not so easy “Ye dil maange more“I want answers and I want action and I have time to get involved!

Thank you terrorist for the “THE AWAKENING”.

Prepare for Mumbai Marathon - some easy Tips

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

As we prepare for the Mumbai Marathon here are some tips on how to start preparing :

Take your mark, get set? Go train!

Read and learn about marathon training before you go ahead. You local bookstore is full of books on Marathon Training. In addition to the large number of books on the topic, Search the web for credible sites addressing the marathon. We provide a small list of Web sites that feature a variety of running and marathon-related topics.

Also, network online and offline with friends and acquaintances who have run the Mumbai Marathon earlier. We suggest that, you create a program for yourself after all the reading and research and stick to it. If you are planning to run the Full Mumbai Marathon, then it might be useful to find a coach or a personal trainer.

Equipment for Mumbai Marathon - shoes and clothes: Buying a good running shoe that meets your biomechanical needs is the most critical equipment to buy for the Mumbai Marathon. Purchase a new pair of running shoes from a specialty running store that employs staff knowledgeable about matching the right shoe with your biomechanical needs of foot type, foot stride and foot strike pattern. Use Cool-max or other synthetic blends socks and shorts that wick away perspiration and enhance your comfort level while running. Record Keeping While Training for the Mumbai Marathon: It really helps to keep a training book while preparing for the Mumbai Marathon.

Use a writing pad, a calendar and a running log to record stuff like: miles run, total time run, and shoe model worn. You must note down your resting heart-rate, running route, your weight compared to your timing and other things that according to you matter in improving your performance for the Mumbai Marathon. The main reasons for keeping this record or information in your note pad is, (a) the log provides a history of your running that might help to find the possible cause of any running injury. (b), a running log could help you determine the training routine that might been the most effective in the past. (c) keeping a record is also motivating for you and you can watch your progress till the final race on 18th January. Some trainers also recommend that you keep a shoe mileage chart. Keep a cumulative mileage total for each pair of the shoes you own, it is easy to know when it’s time to purchase a new pair.

What to eat and drink: Mumbai Marathon drink of choice is water. You as a marathoner must remember that regardless of the outside temperature, you must be well hydrated. This will not only avoid heat complications but also help you to run effectively. For runs of up to 60 minutes or less, water is the drink of choice. Please make sure you avoid fatty and fried food (our hindustani food) before the Marathon and maybe even consult a nuitritionist who can help you with your diet.

Over and above the normal running practice you need to include some cross-training activities along with stretching and weight training to reduce the risk of injury while preparing for the Mumbai Marathon and to ensure total body conditioning. You don’t want to miss the Mumbai Marathon after doing all the hard work of preparing for the same.
