Indian Flag

Independence Day - August 15, 1947 is the golden day in the history of India. The day when India got the gift of independence from the British rule. The stroke of the midnight brought  a ray of new hope for India, as our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru said, the world was asleep but India awoke to life and freedom. A new nation was born! Since then August 15 is celebrated as the independence day in India every year.

History of Independence of India, 15th August 1947: The struggle for Indian independence began with the colonialization of India by Europeans. They came to India as traders but over the period of time they rose to power took control of Indian affairs. British occupied most parts of India whereas Portuguese and French also had their influence on few places. That’s when the great patriots along with a lot unnamed freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for the getting Independence from the British Rule. Many freedom fighters gave their life for the purpose. The urge of Independence found voice in form of many great leaders such as Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Khudiram Bose, Ram Prasad Bismil,Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to name a few.. The sole aim of their lives was - Independence from the British rule. This dream of millions of Indians was realized when finally India got freedom on August 15, 1947. The joy of independence brought along with it the grief of partition! The country was divided into two parts - India and Pakistan. Pakistan assumed August 14 as its independence day whereas August 15 was declared the independence day for India.

WHERE THE MIND IS WITHOUT FEAR

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

I learnt this poem in school.

For the past 6 days, the words of the following prayer from Gitanjali, written by Gurudev Rabindarnath Tagore in 1910, have been reverberating in my mind.

The poem is relevant even today, almost 100 years later.

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”

How timeless and inspiring…..

I’M IN LOVE WITH LOVE TONIGHT

When I have you standing right by my side,

My stomach goes for a roller coaster ride.

Seeing the twinkle in your eye and smile across your face,

Makes my heart beat at a different pace.

I await your call day and night,

I’m in love with love tonight!

I’m a different person these days I guess,

Excited and happy, I’m always in a mess.

Your presence is suddenly all that matters,

Praises for you get me all flattered.

I’m going mad is what they say,

Lost in thoughts night and day.

Is this love or am I down with a bug bite?

I’m in love with love tonight!

I’m out of words for the way I feel,

I want to capture each moment into a reel.

You make the world a better place to live,

I wish there was something in return I could give.

I’ll hold you tight and never let go,

I have faith we’ll see it through high or low.

Exhilarated as I am I can’t get a grip,

I know you will be there even if I slip.

I see no difference in wrong or right,

I’m in love with love tonight!

I entered the class filled with fear,

I was trying to be strong, and was fighting tears.

New people all around and adjustments to make,

It was all too much for me to take.

Sitting in the corner I was dying to talk,

I saw you across the class, playing with your sock.

I was thinking of how to approach you but felt shy,

And you just came casually around and said hi.

For that you became a friend to me,

And I believed we were meant to be.

It was not easy to get adjusted to school,

Innocent minds bounded by so many rules.

There were nursery rhymes and alphabets to study,

Then we hung around the jungle Jim getting all muddy.

My classmate offered me her Tiffin to share,

How lucky I was to have someone who cared.

From there on we always shared our snack,

We became buddies always watching each others back.

For that you became a friend to me,

And I believed we were meant to be.

I received your Barbie birthday bash invite,

It was the first party we were having at night.

I was so happy to come across to your place,

The excitement was seen all over my face.

For that you became a friend to me,

And I believed we were meant to be.

New subjects and studies got into our life,

We were all struggling, trying to survive.

I had no notes as I had missed my class,

You lent them to me and thanks to you I passed.

For that you became a friend to me,

And I believed we were meant to be.

Those innocent years came flashing by,

Today we get caught up in judgements and lies.

Analysing everything in full detail,

We spend time sorting our issues through mails.

If two people are friends we wonder what’s the reason,

We don’t trust anyone to stick around for even a season.

What happened to the blind faith we once had?

Why are situations so easily driving us mad?

As kids we were always readily making friends,

As grown ups its just always the wrong vibes we send.

But today we are together we got through the shit,

Our friendship today is a big hitJ.

I want to thank you for all the time we spent,

I cant express how much your being there meant.

We have started a journey and are friends today,

I just pray to god its forever to stay.

For various reasons you are a friend to me,

And I pray that this is meant to be!
