Munna and Curcuit director Rajkumar Hirani finally moves outside of his fabulous characters to take on the Indian education system. The director has confirmed that this film is an original script, and not based on Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone. Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi make for an interesting cast, but we’re all just waiting to see Hirani bat again.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra became one of the most respected directors in the industry with his apathy-shattering Rang De Basanti a couple of years ago, and we’ve had to wait three years to see what he does next. This one is based on a  colourful, mad part of Delhi called Delhi-6, and stars Abhishek Bachchan opposite Sonam Kapoor. We’re expecting a lot.

5)My Name Is Khan

Myname is Khan

Director : Karan Johar

Producer :Karan Johar, Hiroo YashJohar

Cast  : Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, R.Madhavan

Releasing on : Diwali 2009

Karan Johar seems to completely have dropped the K, and the subject matter for his next Shah Rukh Khan starer is intriguing, to say the least: Khan plays a man targeted at an airport because of his last name and his religion, and that discrimination gives rise to many a question. Then again, the film’s been written by Shibani Bhatija, who wrote Fanaa and Kidnap, so maybe we shouldn’t go in expecting answers.

—————————————

6) Kambakkht Ishq

kambakkht Ishq

Director : Sabir Khan

Cast : Akshy Kumar, Kareena Kapoor

Releasing on : 2009

A romantic comedy about an Indian stuntman who takes Hollywood by storm but cannot find true love. Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor star in this massive budget film. —————————————–

7) Alladin

Alladin

Director : Sujoy Ghosh

Cast : Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Ritesh Deshmukh

Sujoy Ghosh’s film has been in production for the longest time. Ritesh Deshmukh stars as Alladin while Amitabh Bachchan takes on the role of the genie in this rather zany take on the original. The film is a special effects spectacular and by now, we just want to see what in the world has taken this long to make.

8) Wake Up Sid

Wake up Sid

Director : Ayaan Mukherjee

Producer : Karan Johars Dharma Production

Cast : Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma

Releasing on : April 2009

Director Ayaan Mukherji makes his debut with this film that promises to be interesting simply because of its unconventional pairing. Ranbir Kapoor, pinup boy-to-be and current heart-throb of the masses, cast opposite indie queen Konkona Sensharma. We’re waiting to see how these two very different genre-representatives get along, and the title sounds fun too.

———————————————

9) Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Director : Raj kumar Santoshi

Cast : Upen Patel, Darshan Jariwala, Asrani, Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor while Salman Khan will give special appearance.

Katrina Kaif stars opposite Ranbir Kapoor in this film by Raj Kumar Santoshi. That’s right, the socially aware blockbuster-maker is back with a film that sounds pretty darned unusual. The casting is a bit of a coup, the kind of casting that leaves these kids out to fend for themselves without being able to fall back on a massive banner or Akshay Kumar. Salman Khan, however, does make an appearance.

———————————

10) Chatur Singh Two Star

Director : Ajay Chandok

Cast : Sanja Dutt, Amisha Patel, Suresh Menon

Produced by : Mohamed Aslam

Releasing on : May 2009

The film is partially inspired from Pink Panther, but the setting is definitely very Indian. Dutt has great comic timing and for the first time, will be seen in an out-and-out comic role. But the film’s writer Rumi Jaffrey begs to differ and says that Chatur Singh is not based on Pink Panther. Talking about the similarities in the posters of both films, he revealed that since they were unable to get Sanjay Dutt for a shoot, they decided to use a cartoon character instead. Sanju’s character in the film is based somewhat on Inspector Clouseau. Apparently Sanju loved the script when he heard it. He has watched all the Pink Panther movies and is a great fan of Inspector Clouseau.

It’s raining VCDs/DVDs

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

The Hindi films released in the last few months have hardly inspired me to pay a visit to the multiplexes. So nowadays, I head for the VCD/DVD store quite often, to pick up some old Hindi films. The prices are very attractive (I got good Hindi film VCDs for a price as low as Rs. 30 while the DVDs cost a minimum price of Rs. 45). Also there are many good titles, thus I end up buying a large number of films, every time I shop for VCDs/DVDs. I hate the typical masala movies. Instead I go for the unusual ones. I have a great time watching most of them, as rarely do such movies get made these days.

Here are five movies which are total paisa vasool. Check them out as soon as possible:

Ek Ruka Hua Faisla: This gem has been directed by Basu Chatterji. It has an unusual storyline for a Hindi film. Watch it simply for the amazing performances by a number of talented Indian artistes. It is shot on just one location, and yet it holds your attention till the very end as the story and direction is top class.

Drohkaal: When a movie has been directed by Govind Nihalani and has performers like Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri in it, what more can you ask for? Watch this movie, when you are ready for something intense.

Baton Baton Mein: The acting by Amol Palekar (a true symbol of the Mumbai common man) is delightful. The story revolves around Christian families in Bandra, so that’s an interesting reason for everyone from Bandra to watch this flick. This movie is once again directed by Basu Chatterji.

Khamosh: Very rarely do you get a good Hindi suspense movie that too backed by performers like Shabana Azmi, Amol Palekar, Pankaj Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah. The pace of the movie never wavers and you will get a real surprise at the end when the murderer will be revealed to you. This movie has been directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra at the start of his career. Wish he would have continued with more such efforts.

Chhoti Si Baat: This is a wonderful comedy with amusing performances by Ashok Kumar, Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha. Directors like Basu Chatterji and actors like Amol Palekar are truly missed by all true Hindi movie lovers nowadays.

Slumdog Millionaire - Just released in USA

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Jamal Malik Slumdog pictures Anil Kapoor picture Slumdog Millionaire Pictures

Slumdog Millionaire is an “Indian Film” or a international film with an Indian Flavour. As per IMDB, the story of Jamal Malik (Patel), an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Pinto), the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Each chapter of Jamal’s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show’s seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? more

Film critics in the US and around the world are raving about “Slumdog Millionaire”, British director Danny Boyle’s movie adapted from Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup’s bestselling novel “Q & A”, with some hoping it will go to the Oscars!! Syndicated film critic Roger Ebert, whose reviews get published in 200 US newspapers like the New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today, praises the film that stars Bollywood’s Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan. “This is a breathless, exciting story, heartbreaking and exhilarating at the same time, about a Mumbai orphan who rises from rags to riches on the strength of his lively intelligence,” said Ebert. “The film’s universal appeal will present the real India to millions of moviegoers for the first time.” “When I saw ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ at Toronto, I was witnessing a phenomenon: dramatic proof that a movie is about how it tells itself,” he said, calling it “one of those miraculous entertainments that achieves its immediate goals and keeps climbing toward a higher summit”.”It’s hard to hold onto any reservations in the face of Mr. Boyle’s resolutely upbeat pitch and seductive visual style,” said the New York Times. “It’s an undeniably attractive package, a seamless mixture of thrills and tears, armchair tourism …and crackerjack professionalism.” “Both the reliably great Irrfan Khan, as a sadistic detective, and the Bollywood star Anil Kapoor, as the preening game-show host, run circles around the young Mr. Patel, an agreeable enough if vague centrepiece to all this coordinated, insistently happy chaos,” it said. “With its stock characters and often outlandishly contrived plot,” said the Washington Post, the film “could easily be relegated to the category of cinematic stunt, a penny dreadful for the post-modern age.”But even at its most superficial and floridly overheated, this chai-fuelled tall tale retains its appeal, largely because of Boyle’s fluency with the medium he so obviously loves.

“The Washington Times called it “a prize worth savouring”. The film “immerses the audience in an alien landscape and shows it through the eyes of a young man fighting against history and his own culture’s expectations”. The New York Post critic Lou Lumenick declared it “SLUMDERFUL!” “THIS ‘MILLIONAIRE’ IS WELL WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD,” he said, adding: “Four stars simply aren’t enough for Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, which just may be the most entertaining movie I’ve ever labeled a masterpiece in these pages.”

Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan said: “Boyle has been nothing if not bold with this film. He’s dared to use so many venerable movie elements it’s dizzying, dared us to say we won’t be moved or involved, dared us to say we’re too hip to fall for tricks that are older than we are. And, as witnessed by ‘Slumdog’s’ capturing of the Toronto Film Festival’s often prophetic audience award, he’s won that bet.”

The New York Daily News said: “Boyle borrows heavily from Bollywood, and every dazzling frame seems ready to overflow - with people, emotions and a riot of colour…But when Boyle pulls back to show us his grand vision, it’s a stunner. And everything suddenly falls into place, as if this uncommonly daring film was fated to work from the very start.” “With dazzling, magical realism and vigorous storytelling, the film has an enchanting power, fusing a fairy tale quality with gritty realism,” said USA Today. “The beautifully rendered and energetic tale celebrates resilience, the power of knowledge and the vitality of the human experience. Horrifying, humorous and life-affirming, it is, above all, unforgettable.”
