Crimes against women-Alarming!

Recently, as I walked down the main road near my house, I saw a police van with the letters ‘Crime against women’ printed in bold, racing past. There seems to be a spurt in crimes against women, as the recent case of molestation against an air hostess by footballers shows. Women are being mercilessly beaten up, molested, paraded, shorn of any kind of decency. And at the worst receiving end are the older women who just lie helplessly.

The Indian education system has done a lot for empowering women, but even all these measures are falling short. Women don’t enter traditional male dominated sectors like science and research, and the ones who do enter the corporate world are dealt with most brutally. What is it that is going wrong? Are men not able to see women flourish and become independent? So many working women are subject to so much crime that to be unaware now seems to be a stigma. And the most pathetic issue is that even other women are not helping the less fortunate ones.

Everyone knows of the existence of the casting couch in Bollywood, women are really not taken seriously enough and exploited a bit too much. Recently, I saw an old movie by Deepa Mehta, called Fire, and it showed women in a really bad light. Is our education failing to produce the desired results, especially in the rural areas? Are our metrosexual men not able to adapt to the rise of the feminist brigade?

What is the government doing to empower women? Women are not safe; so many call center employees get burgled, raped and killed cruelly. I feel we have still not emerged out of the dark ages when women were considered a lesser species and our mind set needs desperate repair.
