3 Idiots and the Indian education system

Discussions are going on every where regarding the Indian education system after the release of the movie 3 Idiots in which Amir Khan and his team bring out the failures of the Indian education system. But the whole concept of the movie is flawed. The Indian education system is one of the best in the world, and the critique that it produces rote learners, is actually an admission of the fact that we don’t take to education seriously.

With a few changes in the system, the Indian education system can be the best in the world. How can you relieve future doctors, engineers and management students of the burden of thick books and weighty classes? By enrolling them in play school? If you feel that the curriculum is not suitable and that the student can’t study, it shows that the student is not capable enough, not that the books or teachers need to be changed.

It’s time we took our education seriously. If you don’t like study and have not cultivated the habit of asking questions and debating, and digging deeper, then the fault lies in the individual, not the system. Why change a fantastic system to suit average minds and failure individuals? Why lower the standards for a few people who are just not able to make the grade? They have other options like fine art, movies, sports, vocational subjects to make it in the world.

If college is all about fun, frolic and masti, then why go at all? You can do all that from home, with your friends and family, without wasting a seat. The whole movie was about students who just want to have fun and never get serious. But how long are individuals going to remain kids, warm and secure in their unchallenged havens? The character in the movie played by Amir Khan is just a mal adjusted adult who refuses to grow up and face challenges!

Of course, some points were taken well. And if we could change a few of those then all would really be well. The Western world keeps pointing out our so called antiquated system because they don’t want to face the threat of well educated Indians emerging as world leaders any more. The same old system has produced Dr Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, Shashi Tharoor, Ratan Tata, Narayan Murthy, Chanda Kochar, Kiran Shaw and a host of other educated giants. Failure of the majority of students needs to be addressed and this can be taken up by the education councils.
