Dashavtar is a real thrill to watch as it deals with the age old conflict between science and religion. Kamal Hassan makes a stunning comeback with this movie, which you need to watch with your mind in the right place. The movie begins with the traditional battle between Vaishnavs and Shaivites, the message her being that the Lord is misinterpreted in many ways and drawn into one controversy or the other.
Asin plays her part as a devoted wife convincingly, the music is catchy and the story takes you all over the US, India and all over the world. The Japanese are also not left out as Hassan brings out the plot with ease and mastery.
Kamal Hassan, at his creative best, plays one role after another with ease, poise and a certain élan. As the reincarnated scientist Govind Somaiya, Hassan is out there grappling with the end of the world near.
The wide array of the Indian terrain is captured efficiently, and the politics of biological warfare that the Americans deal with, are treated with the right mix of technology, dubbing, theatrics and a lively background score.
The movie gets you thinking when Asin and Kamal fight over an idol, with Asin hell bent on saving her god, and Kamal trying equally hard, to save lives. Are our traditional beliefs of god overrated? Does god exist even if you don’t have faith on him? Or does his existence depend on our belief in him? As the traditional ideologies battle with new age science, the main protagonist tries his level best to keep the faith and also maintain harmony in the human context.
The sights and sounds of the film are catchy and impressive and it is a thinking man’s movie created to put the brain back in entertainment.
