Legalizing prostitutes and gays, right or wrong?
Many people last year met in the streets of Bombay, to protest article 377 of the Indian constitution that proclaims gays and lesbians as outlaws. Are we ready for a more liberal society than we already have? Will the legalization of such activities bring about an end to them, presuming that you really want to abolish such activities?
Are we going after liberalization, even at the cost of our lives and safety? Or better still, are gay rights and now legal prostitution, really something we want in our society?
Today, the Supreme Court ushered in a prolific case, by proclaiming that since there are so many prostitutes in our cities and urban areas, we should probably legalize the age old profession as well. It makes no sense for the women of the land, as then, more and more of their family members, especially in the poorer sections, will press women into prostitution and the status of women, would thus be lost, instead of empowered.
We want our women to be strong support systems of the family, not sluts and why the Supreme Court has come out with this decree, comes as a surprise. It is not a good decision at all, since instead of nipping the problem in the bud, we are giving it a new lease of life.
But the practical mind in us takes over from the ideal. Most women don’t study as hard, work as hard, or even compete as hard as they should. Statistics show that women drop out of studies a lot, and when it comes to higher education, both men and women have a tough time. So, to make it easy for the drop outs and the failures, the SC, has decreed to legalize prostitution!
This sends all the wrong signals to the youth of the nation, who have to choose between the devil and the deep sea! Legalizing this issue is a step back in our attempts to liberate women and is a step backwards in time!
