Never be a yes man!
Authority is always something that challenges you personally. I have never given in to authority because most of the people in charge of situations and other peoples’ lives are not really in the position to do so.
After years of study and self introspection, one will naturally realize that no amount of experience and age are enough to qualify someone else to be of authority. So, it comes naturally to challenge authority and find a mid way in making decisions.
Most managers and people, not only in public life, but also public domains are really not equipped to deal with challenging situations and hence shouldn’t be taken seriously. If it’s really bad, you might even have to stand up for yourself and fight for your rights.
If you’re met with a situation where you have to rely on others for decisions, just stay put, as you will soon see that no one is making the right ones and things are just a royal mess. Some of the best brains from universities like IIT and Harvard, make some of the most poor decisions affecting millions of lives and society at large. What has worked before, needn’t necessarily work after 20 years, and if you look for old solutions to new problems, then you will surely fail.
Such people are failures in the personal front too, where they make poor decisions and emotions guide their rationality. Sometimes even the most qualified and righteous person may be the most wrong person in the room.
So, whom do you trust? If you’re an independent person, you will make your own decisions and not necessarily look for approval from lower subordinates and that makes it even more difficult, as you might be rubbed up the wrong way for a very long time. So, in one word, it is vital for you to subvert existing norms and never say ‘Yes’.
