Operations management is a technical field, important for management students today. Operations looks after the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. It deals with how we manage productive resources dealing with our businesses. An operations executive has to be able to use resources such as raw materials, human resources, equipment and facilities. Operations deals with automated inventory control, constant customer feedbacks, customized products and personal service.
OM is defined as the design, operation, and improvement of the systems that create and deliver the firm’s primary products and services. It is considered to be a field of management. The main topics concerned with OM are core services, value added services, mass customization, strategy, trade offs, the fiancial, customer and internal perspective, developing a manufacturing strategy, productivity measurement, linear programming, project management, product design, development, quality function deployment, process selection and design, quality management, and reengineering.
OM also deals with process analysis, job design and work management, manufacturing process selection and design, service process selection and design, waiting line management, process capability, quality control, statistical quality control, supply chain strategy, and many more detailed topics.
Generally, OM is studied by engineering students, but nowadays, even management students have to know the subject. OM generally deals with the proper and effective functioning of an industry and the processes that go forward in making it a functional entity.
OM managers also have to deal with capacity management, the location of the factory, optimum and lean production and forecasting. Additionally, it also has aggregate sales, inventory control, material requirements planning, simulation of actual processes, synchronous manufacturing, and the theory of constraints.
