Introduction to Exam:
This exam is conducted by the UPSC of India. This test is for the recruitment of engineers to the four categories of the Engineering fields. These are the Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics and Telecommunication branches of Engineering.
The moment you have been appointed you will get to work in the various posts in governmental organizations. This will be the Indian Railways, Central Engineering Service, Survey of India, Indian Ordnance Factories Service (Engineering Branch), Military Engineer Services, Indian Telecommunication Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering Service.

There is immense scope in these jobs as every facet of a citizen’s life is touched by the engineering marvels be it the roads and bridges to the trains that run.

Eligibility for Combined Engineering Services Exam:

Have a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from any recognized University

The age should be between 21 and 30 years on August of the year in which the exam is conducted
Be an Indian citizen
There are certain concessions that are given to Scheduled Caste and the physically handicapped based on age.

Combined Engineering Services Exam - How to Apply:

The notification for the Combined Engineering Exam is published in almost every newspaper usually in the month of December or January.

Once the notification is out, you can go and get the Application Form and the brochure from any post office on a payment of Rs 100.
Fill out the application form and mail it to the Secretary, UPSC. This should reach them before the specified date.
Selection Process and Syllabus:

The selection procedure is made up of two phases:

Stage 1 comprises of a written exam.

The written exam is made up of a 1000 marks and has objective type questions. The subjects are General English, General Studies and other relevant engineering disciplines.

Section 2 of the paper is on the in depth knowledge that the candidate has on the specific engineering subject studied.

The Syllabus is based on the graduation level studies of that particular subject.

The person who has passed the written exam is called for an interview and personality test. This is of 200 marks. The interview and the personality test are the final rounds and if they are cleared then you get an appointment letter.

Combined Engineering Services Examination - Job Prospects / Salary:

As an engineer with the government of India you will have the best of salary and perks offered to you. The least that you will start off with is 2.4 lacs per annum and that does not include the perks and facilities that you will be entitled to. Furthermore, you have the job security and will get a chance to work on big long term projects which might not have been possible if you had joined the private sector.

There will also be plenty of training opportunities and growth prospects. There has been never a known case of a person leaving the job except when they retired. Even after retirement you will be sought after by the private sector based on your vast experience.
