Introduction to Combined Defence Services CDS Exam:

If you are patriotic and young and courageous with adventure and challenges beckoning you, then you must consider appearing for the Combined Defence Services CDS Exam. The exam is conducted twice in a year and every year by the UPSC. This is for entry into the defense services which are the Army, Navy, and the Air Force. The exams are in the months of May and October.

Eligibility For Combined Defence Services CDS Exam::

One needs to be an Indian national and in the age group of not less than 19 and more than 25 for any of the exams conducted by the Combined Defense Services. One must have a university degree from a recognized university and also for the Naval and Air Force they should have had Physics and Mathematics as their subjects. Only unmarried men can apply for most of the jobs. However, there are openings for women too.

Combined Defence Services CDS Exam - How to Apply:

The Commission periodically announces in the newspapers and the Employment news about the notice for the exams. The notification is usually released around August and March and the exam is conducted in February and August. You must fill in the application form which is available at all post offices for a fee of Rs. 20. Each form can be used only once and for only one exam at a time.

The filled out forms must reach the UPS office in New Delhi before the due date and this should be either by hand or by post or courier.

Combined Defence Services CDS Exam - Selection Process:

The Selection process is divided into two parts. The first is the written test and then the interview. Once you clear the written test you will be called for an interview and once you are through that you will be eligible to go for orientation training.

Syllabus & Exam Pattern for Combined Defence Services CDS Exam:

The written examination is divided into three papers which are the same for the Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and the Air Force. It has:

English this is a completely objective paper - 100 marks
General Knowledge - objective - 100 marks
Basic Mathematics - objective - 100 marks
Hence the total is of 300 marks and the duration for each of these papers is two hours.

For Officer’s training the test is only in English and General Knowledge and is of 100 marks each. The papers are of 200 marks altogether and are objective.

There is a penalty marking for wrong answers in all the objective type papers.

If one clears the written papers then one is called for an interview. The marks for this are 300. During the interview one is gauged for intelligence and specific personality traits.
