Polygamy It happens only in India!
In a recent report in a leading daily newspaper, it has been mentioned that polygamy and bigamy in the Muslim tradition are only practiced in India. Which means that in other Muslim countries, the law has been amended, restricting a man to have only one wife as his co-habiting partner.
It is only in India that Muslims can have 4 wives. Even a country like Pakistan has changed its laws and Muslim scholars are reading the Koran again to interpret that one man is entitled to only a single wife.
This may come as a surprise to many Muslims in India who insist on keeping alliances with more than one partner. Physiologically and biologically, this is a good thing and even as far as moral issues are concerned, it is a step in the right direction. It is also a step towards checking the population of a country.
Although India boasts of rapid progress, its laws are still archaic and ancient. We have not kept pace with changing times and hence we face so many problems.
Monogamy is a test for a man to control himself and do what is right. It is also an important evolutionary concept that will bring about better changes in society. It is a step away from the base and carnal nature and instincts of man towards a better understanding of the individual and his role in character building and society.
Many people who are of a different religion convert to Islam to be able to keep more than partner. This is atrocious and illogical. And it happens only in India.
I think people from the Muslim community should come out and bring to the notice of their community that this draconian law be changed and monogamy be introduced and maintained.
