Ayurveda: Food, Diet & Daily Routine in The lighter rains (mid Aug to mid Oct)
In this season the heavy rains slows down. The dark and windy climate changes and we can experience the clear sky and pleasant atmosphere. The humidity decreases, the air becomes little dry. This season comes with the signals of beginning of healthy days of year. For next eight months one can experience the good health naturally. The atmosphere full of energy with green surroundings and clear sky and occasional lighter rains.
As the humidity goes down digestive fire starts burning. This season is also known as October heat. Actually the thermometer shows lower temperature than summer but still one feels little heat experientially. The reason behind this phenomenon is our body is not used to sunrays for past two months. The dark cloud obstructs sunrays. And now suddenly our body is getting exposed to getting sunrays.
Also this is the lesson in which pitta dosha becomes stronger and creates diseases of pitta. Acidity ( burning in the stomach and chest ) burning of palms and soles, eyes, skin diseases, bleeding through nose and through stools, dizziness and so many other problems.

Diet: Comparatively increased heat increased digestive fire, stronger pitta inside demands, diet which should be now little heavy than summer and rains, oily and tasting sweet bitter and astringent. (remember the pitta pacifying diet) sour, salty and pungent tastes should be reduced as they are increases pitta.
Cereals: Once again like summer rice will be the best choice. Rice is sweet oily and cool in nature which is necessary to pacify pitta. Only now it should be made little heavy. Otherwise it will not satisfy the increasing hunger. Traditionally in India it is treated with coconut, sugar and milk ( all sweet, cold in nature) e.g. coconut rice, sweet rice, pious ( milk, sugar and rice a sweet liquid but little thicker than milk) In millets. Sorgum (cold in nature ) is good. Wheat can be used in form of poli, phulka but not parathas (very heavy stuff).
Pulses: All pulses are sweet, little bitter or astringent therefore can be used in this season. But remember their quantity. It is always much less than cereals.
Vegetables: You can get very fresh vegetable in this season. Vegetables sweet, bitter and astringent are to be used in this season.( see the appendix).
Milk and milk products: Like summer this is to be used generously in this season except curd, yagrut and buttermilk which is sour in taste.( sweet butter milk is permissible). Curd, yagrut are basically sour in nature which increases pitta. As compare to summer now you can make this product little heavy. Like making various hfhfj from milk ( thicker than milk), sweet lassi ( a thick butter milk) Ghee is the best medicine for pitta. So naturally one must use ghee generously in this season. All this sweet, oily and cool milk products will pacify pitta and increased hunger.
Spices: Now you must gusses about them. Yes, how can we use hot spices in this season further promote already increased pitta. So you must avoid or reduce red chilly, green chilly, black pepper, ginger, garlic, clove, mustard seeds etc.
Fruits: The seasonal fruits available in this season can be consumed. As in summer watery, juicy fruits are important in this season fruits which are more solid are important. Water fruits wont serve the purpose. And also fruits should be solid not sour. E.g. banana, chikku, guava, pomegranate, fig, coconut etc.
Water: As per the demands of the body. Water or any liquids should not be consumed unnecessarily.
Oils: Oils should be used in moderation. Ghee, butter should be given more preference. Adding coconut in vegetables, salads or in sweets serves the purpose.
After going through diet of this season you can come out with so many conclusions. How nature is changing its colours. Now slowly hunger, appetite is increasing and therefore it is necessary to put little heavier food into the stomach. That means more sweet and more oily. That means more earthy food, such food can be digested by the body now. If you are eating such food in summer or rains you will suffer from indigestion. But in this season such food after digestion will give good body energy. Naturally the body strength will go on increasing. Remember now time has come to strengthen our body which will help us in season of summer and rains next year. Now this is the time for work. As your body energy is good you can work longer.
Are you getting some valuable message from above information. Yes, the changing quality of nature. So how can keep ourselves rigid. We must change with nature, we must urhrj quality of flexibility in ourselves.
If we continue to eat lighter, less oily food of rains in this season, our body will remain under nourished. And your weakness, fatigue, low energy will continue. The season in which you should enjoy real health, you should clear up mountains of work, you will experience fatigue and ill health.
Just keep away rules of diet decided by just thinking and thinking intellectually. Listen to your body, listen to your experiential knowledge. Yes there will be some individual variation. For example, A fat person should not increase oils, ghee and quantity as others but he must increase some quantity as compare to summer and rains.
Daily routine: As the energy level has increased body can digested little heavier food stuff, you can start moderate amount of exercise. Exercise done in next 5 to 6 months will make your body more immune for seasonal changes and can endure a physical Stress to great level. Ayurveda lays out certain principle to fallow while performing exercise. Please check this under article of exercise.
Swimming or normal / lukewarm temperature waters bath, exposure to cold breeze in the night under the open sky, using cool powders ( as in summer ), protecting from sunrays will help to cool down.
Now you should not sleep for longer hours in afternoon. Just sleep for half an hour is enough. As the body strength is improved you can have sex in little more frequency than summer and rains.
Medicines: To combat pitta problems pitta pacifying medicines and panchkarma like virechan ( giving medicines to have loose motions) and rakta moshan ( blood lifting ) are useful.
