IAS Exam Schedule - IAS Civil Services Exam (IAS) across Indian by UPSC in Oct Nov 2009

IAS - The Civil Services or IAS Exam in India offer one the prestige and job security that only a government job can. There are three major branches namely the IAS, IPS and the Central Services. The test is extremely  competitive to get through as lacs of candidates apply for a few vacancies of say about 400 to 500.

There are certain eligibility criteria that one has to fit before one  can appear for the exam. Firstly you need to be a citizen of India, must be not less than 21 and more than 30 years. The upper age limit is relaxed for certain sectors such as scheduled caste and scheduled tribes. The minimum qualification is a degree in any subject from a recognized university.

Every candidate is given a chance to appear and attempt the test for four times. If the person has got through in any other branch of the civil services like say the IPS then he will not be eligible to appear for the test. Also, there are certain physical standards that need to be met.

This All India competitive exam is conducted by the Union Public Commission (UPSC) It is mainly made up of two parts. They are the Preliminary exam and the main exam.

The Preliminary exam has the objective kind of questions and is the qualifying exam for the main one.

The main exam is further divided into two sections which are the written exam and the interview.

The Preliminary exam is mainly held in May/June and the main exam in October/ November. If you do not prepare for both of them simultaneously then you will have hardly any time once the Preliminary test results have been declared.

The Preliminary Exam consists of two papers:

Paper I which is of General Studies and comprises of 150 marks
Paper II which is an optional subject of your choice of 300 marks
Paper II has got subjects as varied as animal husbandry, mathematics,
civil engineering and so forth. The papers are objective type based on the multiple choice pattern. The papers are in two languages Hindi and English.

The syllabus for the optional subjects will be that of graduate level study. Each of the papers are of two hours. The blind are allowed an extra twenty minutes for each of the papers.

The Main Examination has the following papers:

Test paper subject marks
Paper I An Indian language (the candidates choice) 300 marks
Paper II English 300 marks
Paper III An Essay 200 marks
Papers IV&V General Studies 300 marks each
Papers VI-IX Any two subjects (the candidates choice) 300 marks each
There are certain combinations in the optional subjects that are not allowed such as Mathematics and Statistics together.

The final stage of selection is the interview which is conducted somewhere in April/May every year. This is the stage where they test whether you are able to express your opinions, your personality and a
general interest in the things happening around the world.

Once you have cleared this then there is the medical test. Out of the candidates selected the cream move on to become IAS officers.
