Giselle Monteiro - Love Aaj Kal
Giselle Monteiro : Everyone came out wondering who Harleen is after seeing Love Aaj Kal. Well this Punjabi kudi is not really a Punjabi kudi. She’s a 19-year-old Brazilian model called Giselle Monteiro. Giselle Monteiro couldn’t speak Hindi or dance to save her life, at one point in time while shooting for Love Aaj Kal.
In the film, Sardar Saif is in love with Giselle Monteiro. Giselle Monteiro is the Punjabi Girl he wants to marry. Well, the sequence of her dance at her engagement drove the entire unit up the wall. Apparently Giselle Monteiro just couldn’t get the steps right. For a foreigner like Giselle Monteiro to get the Indian steps and nakharas right is very tough. We usually take for granted those jhatka-matkas which we’ve seen most of the girls perform at weddings. Indian girls have that in their blood and they don’t need training on that. But for a foreigner Giselle Monteiro, it was very tough.

Actually Giselle Monteiro was auditioned to play Jo, Saif’s Gori girlfriend in the second half of Love Aaj kal. Also Imtiaz was auditioning girls from all over the country to play the Punjabi girl opposite the Sikh Saif and couldn’t find the right girl to play the purane zamane ki, 1965 ki gali mein rehne wali ladki. His wife suggested Giselle Monteiro for Harleen. She didn’t know how to speak Hindi. Luckily Giselle had only two lines to speak, which we dubbed. Not to mention Giselle looked perfect for the role she played and audience kept wondering who the Punjabi Kudi (Giselle Monteiro )was?
