Mumbai monsoon, Mumbai rains - Mumbai to witness highest tide of the century
The weather bureau has been warning of high waves hitting Mumbai this week and the MBC has come up with a contingency plan to tackle such emergencies.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been informing the residents that between July 22 and July 26, Mumbai would witness the highest tide in 100 years. Though the BMC has been declaring that the 5.05 metre high tide is expected today as the highest of the century there is no need to panic and spread rumours. Also do not try to be brave and venture into the sea, and be extra cautious in low-lying areas.
Fortunately, there was no heavy rainfall during the high tide period to have caused serious damages though high waves have hit and destroyed slum homes close to the sea. Several residents of Bandra, Versova and Cuff Parade have been evacuated after sea water entered their houses. Not to be taken unawares, the BMC has decided to provide temporary shelter, food and water to those evacuated and are now housed in 50 municipal schools.
Thirty-three fire stations in the city and its suburbs are placed on alert to meet any emergency. Mobile service providers have been asked to send SMS es regarding traffic jams, flooded areas and rainfall.
The BMC has posted lifeguards along Mumbai’s beaches to maintain a strict watch on people venturing near the sea.
