FYJC Admission : Cut Offs up this year - first Merit List announced, cut offs gone up by 2% to 5%

FYJC Admission : 11th standard admission, Junior college admission first Merit  List announced, cut offs gone up by 2% to 5% - The first merit was announced yesterday afternoon and students seeking admissions in 11th standard in  junior colleges  discovered that cut offs in most Junior colleges had risen this year by a marginal two to five per cent in some cases, and to even 10% in many others than last yesr cut offs.

Even though students were allotted seats based on their scores and not on percentages, colleges converted the scores to percentages. The citys top destination for studying , St Xaviers College, closed its merit list at 89.42%, up from last years 84%. Even entry scores for the science stream were up by five per cent as compared to the closing percentage in 2008. Well a rise in the number of students who scored 90% and above across all boards may be  responsible for the phenomenal jump in entry levels. Ruparel College - closing percentage for science has gone up by 1% from last year.

Competition in the arts stream was also unusually stiff across a number of colleges. For instance, while Ruparel is the Mecca for science students, its cut-off for the humanities stream was up by 10% as compared to last year. It closed at 81%.

This year, due to the online system, admissions were not staggered. In other words, last year, the first merit list accounted for only a section of seats, leaving the others for the second round of admission. However, this year, the first cut-off could well be the final one in most sought-after institutes.

At Goregaons Patkar-Varde College, cut-offs had risen by about five per cent in each stream they offered, as many families had shifted to the Western suburbs and parents did not want their children to travel a lot.

In the case of Ruia College, the number of students scoring above 90% scorers and applied Ruia  college from all over the city resulting in a rise in cut-offs this year. Unlike the offline system, which saw names of students coming up in several colleges, the online system allotted every students one seat based on his overall marks, the preference of stream and the locality he or she hailed from.

But 23,000 students, who could not decide about the streams they wanted to get into were allotted two seats, one in each stream. Once these students pay up the fees in one of the college assigned to them, the second list will allow as many students a higher option.

The MKCL was to put up collegewise merit lists yesterday. However, most college could not access the site. The students received SMSes on their cellphones informing them about the college they had been allotted a seat in.
