Save your Job - Too good to survive!

When an employee is too good for the company and his team, the people generally see to it that such an employee is ousted. Instead of retaining the employee, they get rid of him and keep mediocre ones instead. Just because the majority is average and the single individual too good for the company, the individual gets sidelined.

This happens everywhere. Recently, in a company I was freelancing for, they got a new recruit who wrote very well, but somehow, despite my disapproval, they got the employee to leave. This is a really sad way to treat the stars of the company and instead of getting their dues, they get sidelined in the process.

Why do managers do this? Blame it on human weakness, you may argue. But how long will a corporation last on weak people? If you’re a manager and you get a star performer under you, instead of making way for him to progress, will you feel threatened and stall his progress in the company? But of course, you will stop him. And without enough explanation and due discussion, you and the others around will see to it that he leaves.

That is probably due to a herd mentality and the law of averages does win over here.

What are star performers to do, if they’re treated with disrespect and continuous denial? You might argue that they are good enough for anything, but that might not be really the case. An individual, no matter how good he is, cannot survive without the goodwill and backing of his colleagues and superiors. So, if you’re looking to crush the spirit of a spirited employee, you better think twice. Not only will you be harming the organization, the individual concerned, and your own conscience will keep you up all night. It’s just not acceptable and the right thing to do to punish someone who is good, even if he is too good for you…….Neha Singh
