Homosexuality - In the name of freedom! Gay days for India
It’s a historic day for the gay community in India as Delhi has repealed section 377 to include gays in the mainstream. I’ve never had gay friends, so I don’t exactly know what goes on in the mind of one, but I feel adults are free to choose partners of their choice.
Gays are probably those who are attracted to people of the same gender from birth. But I feel you could become gay if you’ve nasty experiences from men. In our search for love and security, when men treat us badly, and they normally do; then women have to turn to other women. The same can be said of men. If you’re looking for the perfect, ideal match and you’re disillusioned, you have to learn to live with imperfection.
I like my girl friends a lot but have never been attracted to a female ever. I like my male friends too and have been attracted to more than one male in my lifetime. But, in my race for perfection, I have lost out on a single, meaningful relationship. Gays are normal people and some of them are exceptionally intelligent people. Although I would never personally take a female lover, I feel that they are really brave in expressing their sexuality openly.
And so, they’ve got a legal status. But society’s attitude towards them will never change. They will always be pariahs, living in dark isolation. I personally haven’t reached the level where I can be non-judgmental; but I if I had a gay friend, I wouldn’t treat him like an outcast.
With this law, I feel India is maturing, and it is reflecting on our lawmakers. Some hardliners would never accept such a law, but who cares what they think anyway! Our own culture harks back to the days when our gods and goddesses would assume the opposite form and charm members of the same sex. So, homosexuality is nothing new in India, and it’s about time we became aware and legitimized it.
