FYJC Admission - 90:10 quota system: Will it have major impact on ICSE & CBSE students?

Junior college principals across the city are now wondering how they will manage to reserve 90 per cent of their seats - in all streams -  for SSC students. Many of the better colleges in the city say they are surrounded by ICSE and CBSE schools, and are going to find it difficult to close their doors to these students. Such a far-reaching decision should have been taken long before the admission season and not at the eleventh hour.

Some feel that the government’s decision is only a temporary solution to the problem. In future, the government needs to take the necessary steps to ensure that there is no discomfort for students of any board. SSC students do feel deprived as students of other boards tend to score higher marks than them. Only 4-5 per cent of students applying to junior college are from non-SSC boards.

The colleges track record shows that even in the absence of a formula, there has been a fair and equal distribution of seats between SSC and ICSE applicants. Let’s see how the new system works. An alternate solution could have been to consider the best of five subjects in each course.(Source : TOI)
