New Formula for College Admissions
College Admissions: Now, five subjects in which a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) student scores the maximum marks, will be taken into consideration for calculating the marks to be considered for admission to colleges.
Last year, all subjects were taken into account. The Bombay High Court had stopped the system following opposition from parents.
However, the new system has not yet received state government nod and may not be applicable this year.
It was observed that there were variations in marks obtained by students from different boards due to differences in the marking methods and choice of subjects.
For instance, while SSC has three compulsory language subjects (four in the case of students who have opted for composite language option), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have only two. The then school education minister Vasant Purke had argued that the ICSE and CBSE students had an advantage over SSC students as ICSE and CBSE followed a more lenient marking system as compared to SSC.
A committee would be appointed to identify the problems and what went wrong last year. The percentile created a stir last year. Many ICSE and CBSE school principals were not convinced with the methodology while many SSC principals hailed it. The method was introduced primarily to ensure that SSC students, who often score less than their ICSE and CBSE counterparts, do not lose out on admission to top colleges. Several flaws were found in the formulae. Besides, circulars regarding implementation of the method were sent to colleges just two days before the first merit list was to be displayed.
