Job hopping versus longevity

Traditional views may uphold longevity in a job as essential, but now-a-days, to stick to one job for a lifetime is considered neither possible nor attractive. Students are too young to decide what exactly they want to do after school and college. Unless they are from professional backgrounds such as medicine, engineering, architecture and the like, they can always switch their fields. As an employer, a company will certainly want a traditional employee, but as more and more avenues open up, it is not possible for potential employees to stick to one trade. Employees should be allowed to dabble in a host of fields before they decide which one suits them best. I, for one, am an experimenter, and find it difficult to stick to just one field endlessly. A creative person like me will not be able to thrive in a routine environment. As such, if employees express negativity, ill temper, restlessness and irritability, then it’s possible that they might be under challenged. If you don’t like your work atmosphere and if you’re not making friends or influencing people, then it’s time for a change.

Job hoppers are often construed as being irresponsible, but that might not really be the case. They might be expressing some limitations in their present situation like clash of ideology or discomfort. They might also be experimental and capable of taking risks. If you’re a talented person, with many qualities, you will definitely find it difficult to zero in on one. A frequent job hopper might just be too good for his jobs and might actually be serially underestimating himself. Eventually, you’ve got be able to like what you do because you have to do it for a long time. So, if after several job hops, you finally find your calling, then you will survive and flourish. But even after a very long period of time, you still haven’t found your niche, then something’s wrong.

Job hoppers are generally good at many jobs and multitasking. They might also be exceptionally fast. This implies that by the time an average person settles, learns the ropes and assimilates his job, a job hopper has already moved onto the next job. Job hoppers need to be given timely promotions and recognition for their speed. Eventually, job hoppers, even after they’ve tried everything, will find and stick to their passion for a long, long time.
