Selecting a right college is the most important choices you have to make in your life. The fact is you’ll spend the next three to five years in that college and the education, experiences, faculty, crowd will follow you through most of your life and career. Listing a few points on which you can base your decision of selecting a right choice.
Area / Location
This will narrow your list immensely. Do you want a college near your house? Do you want a college that is at least in the same city as you are? Commuting time and convenience are important considerations. If you are leaving home or your city for a college in another university, this becomes less important, since you can choose a residence near your college instead of choosing a college near your residence.
Reputation
The kind of reputation your college has is very important. It’s not only fashionable to say that you passed out from a well reputed college but you are likely to get good company which will remain your strength all through. It also saves your time of having to prove yourself if you are from a reputed college. To evaluate the reputation of the college, you can follow a simple method. Look at the cut-offs which are usually available online or in the university prospectus. The higher the cut-offs, the more sought-after the college and of course more reputed.
Subjects Available
Again the most important point to be considered. Should you choose a college you really want even if you don’t get the subjects you do? Should you go to a college that you don’t want to just because it gives you your desired course? This is your call completely. Figure out first, what kind of career you want. If you’re absolutely sure about it then its an easier choice. Also, if you are not so sure of what you want do, you can choose an all-purpose degree - in Science, Commerce, Arts etc. at a reputed college.
Teachers
Don’t just go after distinguished faculty. Sometimes it doent help in teaching. So find out which colleges have the best faculties by asking your seniors, who have are studying under these teachers and might know which other colleges have good faculties too. An interesting and knowledgeable teacher makes your studies and college life happy andeasier.
Fees Structure
College can be expensive and student loans or scholarships are not very common in India. If you cannot afford a private college a government college is the best option for you. Also some private colleges, certain courses demand less donations than others. The donations you have to pay also decrease if your marks are higher.
Company of Fellow students
A college in suburb may have very different students compared to those in town. Even within the same geographical area some colleges follow different rules. You may find out about how liberal or strict a college is before your join it by asking your seniors.
Extra-curricular activities
Some colleges may and have excellent sports facilities, auditoriums etc and may not. Besides the infrastructure, the organisations within the college also vary in quality. So if you are very serious about sports in college, you need to be selective. If the Basket ball team/training is not so good, you may not be able to get good opportunities to excel. So if you’re serious about pursuing any extra-curricular activity - ask your seniors about how supportive the college is in case you miss some lectures and practices.
When you finish a good course from a reputed college you will get placement options. So choose your college and course wisely.
