Water shortage in Bandra, Khar, Santacruz and other parts of Mumbai
More than five-lakh households falling in six wards of south and south-central Mumbai will go without water for four days this week with the civic body deciding to carry out work on the Tansa main water line. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which has not prepared any contingency plan to deal with the resultant shortage, has urged residents to use water judiciously.
The Mumbai Vikas Railway Corporation, under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project, is laying new fifth and sixth tracks between Mahim and Santa Cruz. The work on the Mahim-Bandra section will begin on Tuesday (June 2).
However, the Tansa main line, which supplies water to main reservoirs in the island city and some areas in South Mumbai, falls on the path of the proposed railway tracks.
The BMC has decided to push the water line deeper into the ground so that it doesn’t suffer any damage when rail traffic begins to ply on the proposed tracks. The civic body will also realign the line wherever possible so that it doesn’t fall exactly under the tracks.
To carry out this work, the civic body has announced that there will be no water supply to some parts of south and south-central Mumbai on June 2 and 3 and June 5 and 6.
“There is need to isolate the water supply to these areas to carry out this work,” said Santosh Korlekar, BMC’s chief hydraulic engineer.
But with no contingency plan in place, the civic body has asked people not to waste water and use water judiciously.
