And the debate continues…
Many saints in India have expounded and personally followed the Vedanta theory in which the individual rises above all duality and meets himself, of course, in a higher context. But this theory appears false, as to many, especially in the West, it promises an escape route out of the miseries of life and so they continue to live in misery and glorify crime and punishment. Western thinkers and scientists believe that there is no state of experience where there is no mind and thought, labeling the state of Nirvana or Moksha in Hinduism as delusional.
I have personally studied both philosophies and am very close to making my call. So, is the promise to rise above the mind and end all miseries really possible? Or is it just an old school thought that vehemently needs denial? Vedanta questions the relationship between the individual, the world and God; whereas science and rationalists believe that there is no existence other than what is seen or perceived. So, in that case, since the mind is not seen and we do have thoughts, Science goes wrong in denying the mental, intellectual and spiritual personalities of our being as they are not seen and can’t be objectified. Here, the Vedantins score, as they do believe in thoughts, concepts, ideas, ideals, values and ultimately mastery over the Self. Meditation will necessarily bring about the change that the world wants to see.
I believe that Science falls short for not believing. Not believing in things like higher ideals, higher consciousness, good values and ultimately renunciation of the grosser, lower energies; whereas Vedanta believes even in not believing and objective, scientific analysis. Vedanta takes into consideration the entire world of duality and plurality and offers an explanation for it. Here again, Science fails. We are of the nature of spirit and in denying us our flight of freedom; Science has caused the most damage. Science confines us to the routine, it compels us to live grossly and be bound by the limitations of the body. It forces us to lead predictable, mundane existences. It is a sure means of compiling material comfort but moral degradation. And by now, you should’ve guessed, the verdict’s out! You have just been in contact with a proud Vedantin!
