How to deal with over achievers!

Many people who are out to work are often perceived as over-achievers. They question the system and trend-spotters are then able to realize what’s going on and rectify the system. The 360° interview is a good technique to find out and keep people who are steadily over-achieving. I am an over-achiever and am proud that I have ruffled quite a few feathers in my climb upwards. If you have an over-achiever in your midst, it doesn’t work to keep undermining and underestimating his performance. At the end of it, if he gets too brash, he will overthrow your system and start a new one which he’ll probably head. That is possibly what you’re looking for in the first place.  

Over achievers should be given proper promotions in the proper time or they might just cast aside your abilities to judge them. Repeated tests and evaluations and prevention to see his abilities are all wrong tactics which might rub him up the wrong way. It is not wise to keep testing such a person because it just reflects your inabilities and insecurities regarding that person. Why don’t you just admit that he is too good for you? And why not grant him what he truly deserves. There are many cases in which the employee is tested in several ways, often the testing also falls short and in the end the employee is not given what he deserves. Then some employers also pretend to be in a recession, lack of funding mode and deny the true right to the over-achiever. Many employers might even think of them as a nuisance and try every trick up their sleeve to reduce the speed and effectiveness of such an employee who will take it up as a challenge and prove them wrong even if for the umpteenth time.  

Over achieving is good and should be dealt with positively by people who are rightfully in the place to judge such gems. Only rarely will you find someone who points at the failings of your system and should be treated with respect. Also, whatever the over-achiever is pointing out should be implemented and changed effectively instead of dousing the fire that he has started. You have to be good enough to judge and mould an overachiever, he has probably, even without your knowledge, outshone you! You should be pondering on the fact that whether you and your system are good enough for him anymore and ways of retaining such potential!
