Lord Rama- Vishnu’s reincarnation
March is considered a holy month for the Hindus of North India and early April brings the birth of Shri Ram, the 8th re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu. History has it that Lord Vishnu was born 9 times since the inception of this earth and a 10 th ‘avatar’ of the sper God is yet to take place. Cultural views hold that it is extremely auspicious to read the Ramayan during these days. Vishnu, the Almighty second Lord of the Hindu trinity has the role of preserving the Earth. It is his job to do away with evil and keep the earth free of sins and wrongdoers. So, when the evil Ravana was born as an Asura, it was necessary for the Lord to take birth again to get rid of all the demon’s wrongdoings.
In the Ramcharitramanas, there is an interesting episode in which in a previous birth Ravana was a good and just king Bhanupratap who was lured into the forest by one of his enemies and duped into defiling one lakh Brahmins. The Brahmins, who were served meat and animal food, cursed the king that he would be born as a demon and thus starts the Ramayan.
This year the birth of Shri Ram falls on the 3rd of April exactly 9 days after the celebration of the Hindu new year or Gudi Padwa.
Many Maharashtrians celebrate this day with pomp and gaiety with lots of celebration and goodies for the family. Lord Rama is known to be the epitome of wisdom, the pinnacle of manhood and an ideal son, brother, king, husband and a wise ruler. Shri Ram was a just ruler and was born to bring joy and peace on the earth. He was born to the King Dashrath and his wife Kaushalya. The struggles and victories of Rama symbolize the ultimate triumph of good over evil or of spirit over matter. In the span of his lifetime Shri Ram was known to have absolved the sins of many sinners. Much like Christ, the entire universe was extremely happy with the birth of Vishnu as a human. It is said that some humans and animals turned into angels and higher beings just with his supreme sight. This year resole to do at least one good deed in your life and shun all those who label you an idealist. Just for the record, Ram was an idealist.
