Problem Solving & Number Crunching
When it comes to solving problems, we Indians lag really far behind. Leave aside solving problems, we don’t want to even hear about them or recognize them. So, as a result, we end up sweeping issues under the carpet or covering up losses with a bad patch-up job. During my MBA at ISBM, I came across some serious problems with the Operations paper and no one wanted to hear about it. I ran from pillar to post trying to get someone to solve the issues, but they didn’t even want to hear about it. You can survive if you confidently cover up your ignorance and leave the issue to destiny or God. Pathetic, well, it is indeed!! Even at the workplace I keep meeting people who appear to hide a lot of scandal, frustration and failure under a brave smile. Leave aside addressing these issues, most of these people don’t even confront them. I think some of them don’t know they’ve been hit with a problem!! I believe that every problem has a solution if you apply yourself, sometimes even a team, if necessary, but in the present Indian scenario, people quite often are mistaken to be machines. You are not allowed to err, misjudge, cry, lose or show any signs of weakness. How odd!! Haven’t you heard somewhere that to err is human? But we are so busy being perfect that somewhere down the line we have forgotten to be human. And the reality is a far cry from that! Not only are we far behind in world competitiveness, we are not even very sure about our SWOTs. (Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). And that is the bane of human existence!! People don’t talk about losses, they’ll create a huge disastrous scam, but they won’t hear how it could’ve been avoided.
People don’t confront their weaknesses or fears, but keep running from them. I have found that if you discuss your weaknesses or work on them proactively, you will eventually emerge victorious, but no one has the capacity for problem solving. My friends are even worse off. They sit at home doing nothing, but will not strive to address the issues that are bugging them. I see a lot of this going on in homes and in public places. At home children refuse to discuss their problems with their parents and parents just want to be independent, when they are a far cry from the word!! How does it hurt to seek help, assistance or some advice? But no, we are too perfect to warrant that!! We don’t want to trust others’ expertise and keep relying on our defunct and inaccurate systems (sometimes whole selves) that are so low on rationale and logic. I think as a people we are just one lump of inflated egos, floating around anchorless, gloating over our miseries!!! Do we need another century of enlightenment out of these Dark Ages?
Or are we going to wallow in self-pity and sit around doing nothing? I think the choice is obvious, just get up and do something!!!
