The benefits of freelancing- an objective analysis
Freelancing in these troubled times is the way out for any financial blocks (blokes?) you might be facing. Especially if you’ve been laid off or worse, have had to leave for pathetic circumstances. Freelancing offers you the opportunity to take on multiple assignments at a time. It also reduces the time to travel, reduces the stress of politics and protocol and you can work at any time of the day it suits you. You can also balance your work and life, get in more activities like fitness and health and also pursue other interests. Since I started freelancing I have also lost 10 kgs with my exercise regimen/yoga, have been able to catch up with old friends and am also checking out potential matrimonial matches. All this is inconceivable if you have a 9-9 job, useless colleagues and political jigsaws to overcome.
Also, when you work alone there are lesser distractions and productivity increases. You don’t have any relationship issues to deal with and people who keep piling on will necessarily reduce. Not to mention that you will be not be under the spotlight the whole day through and all your actions and thoughts will not be analyzed or deconstructed.
Although you won’t get the power of a designation or the security of a chair, you will get immense creative satisfaction and unhindered production levels. Most people in fields like finance, HR, accounts, management will not understand this, but people in creative pursuits, more concerned about work than relationships, do have many reasons to switch to freelancing.
There are some work cultures that are strictly a no-no. Like some offices force you to mix with the opposite sex, when you only have deadlines and reports on your mind. This causes unnecessary pulls and pushes and your mind gets split between work and socializing. Most workaholics who don’t want to submit to mindless games and who are not inclined towards obsessive networking will agree with me. I sometimes feel like a scientist in a laboratory, working away at my findings. Also there will be reduced prying and jealous eyes. You will be amazed at your efficiency when you don’t have that call to answer, or that difficult colleague to deal with or that psychotic boss to handle. Most importantly, you will not be plagued with work, which is a case when an efficient employee takes over. How long can you be a pillar of strength in your organization when everything else around you is crumbling? Also how long are you going to be around to make things stable when the others are just not working or are inefficient?
So, if circumstances are just not suitable and people have sky-high expectations of you, do yourself a favor, ditch them and walk out. That’s the least you can do for yourself and your sanity.
