About the Sahyadri School !

It was way back in 1998 when I was a teacher at the Sahyadri School that I first encountered the hills of the Sahyadri range. The school, being a Krishnamurthi Foundation school, was different in every possible way. It was built on the Krishnamurthi philosophy of questioning and nurturing an inquisitive and curious mind that does not take anything at face value. You might have heard of the Rishi Valley school, that produces some of the best students in the country, and I was really proud at that time to be associated with such a revolutionary concept in education. The school teaches students to be independent, self sufficient, wholesome, healthy and most importantly, it instills in them the quest for knowledge and perfection.

It was a boarding school with all possible facilities and elegant quarters for its staff. The children came from all over India and were uninhibited, free and exposed to the best of both worlds, Indian and Western. Many foreign dignitaries would come to sojourn there and also impart some of their wisdom and partake of the wholesome experience and sound ideology that the school had to offer. There was a sense of security you felt, at being ensconced in an age-old institution with most modern and up to date facilities. Children were not taught by rote, but by creative and exciting means that would leave them inspired and instill in them the desire for learning more.

The environment of the school was friendly, warm, intelligent and the relationship between the teacher and pupil was a special one based on mutual trust, respect and acceptance. Children excelled in not only academics but dramatics, sports, art, music, dance, singing, gymnastics and all fields that would bring about the creative development of the individual child. The school had a student’s newspaper with vivid and thought provoking contributions by motivated and ignited minds. The Art team was specially called in from Shanti Niketan, and all the teachers inspired some of the best, contemporary works from the students. There were Physics, Chemistry, Biology labs and a library that held some of the best works for children and teachers to read. I must admit that some of my finest hours were spent scouring Grammar references and History text books and encyclopedias.

The setting of the school was also picturesque, with a river, a dam, a hill, valleys, hamlets and infinite greenery spread over acres and acres of fertile land. Krishnamurthi spent a lot of effort in choosing his educational sites that would continue to inspire the teacher and the taught. Sahyadri certainly did. The evening sunset sessions where all teachers and students gathered on the hillock to spend an introspective, quiet evening were a thing to remember. Also, the morning assemblies and cultural events that the students put up, will forever light up my memories.
