The elusive manager!
Getting an MBA degree is considered out of fashion nowadays. Many graduates I’ve worked with feel that there is no use and just work experience is enough to keep you going. But I differ on the subject. An MBA degree, in fact, any degree will always place you a few notches above, even though your competitors will refuse to accept that. But if you’re only a graduate, or worse, even a diploma holder, then an MBA is certainly useful.

The best MBAs are certainly from the premier IIMs, but in Mumbai even institutes like Jamnalal Bajaj, SP Jain, Welingkar’s and Narsee Monjee are good enough. A full time MBA is essential for just graduates with no or little experience, but a part-time MBA together with a full-time job is what employees usually go far. I personally opted for a distance learning MBA as it fitted my budget and had Communication Management as a specialization. I also gambled with the fat that I had 2 PG degrees and 6 years of work experience. There are only two institutes that offer an MBA in Communication in India. One is MICA or Mudra at Ahmedabad and the other is Symbiosis at Pune. Both unfortunately are full time, on-campus courses and cost a bomb. It is essential that if you want to join these courses, you get your company to sponsor you. There is one other institute ISB & M, at Kolkata that specializes in Media and Communication studies. These MBAs are ideal for Arts graduates and Post graduates, looking for career enhancement.
What does an MBA do? Firstly, it gives the knowledge to be employable in the corporate sector. Secondly, in any MBA program you have case studies that actually deal with real life situations that companies face. This opens up a whole new world for a student equipped with only a graduate degree. An MBA from the IIMs is definitely worth a try, even twice or thrice in a lifetime. The CAT is relatively easier than JEE, medical entrance, or even the GRE and GMAT useful for studies abroad. Coming to that subject, I feel that an MBA from a college abroad is useful if the college is relatively recognized. You have the Ivy league colleges that are ideal, but again, cost you a bigger bomb. You have to get scholarships and assistantships to ease the strain. For that your graduation marks, your junior college marks and your school leaving board marks are all taken into consideration. Added to that is your participation in extra curricular activities. It helps a lot if you are a state level or national level sportsperson, a debater, a speech specialist or even a social worker. You can try your hand at dramatics, art, singing, music, dancing, but you have to have reached a certain level of distinction.
