Candle Light March at Carter Road Bandra
Last night, around 9.30 pm, I was feeling depressed, restless and in need of fresh air after hours spent in front of the television following the horrific and traumatizing terror attack and its brave and tragic end.
I decided to go for a drive and, as usual, I took my oft-beaten path down Pali Hill via Carter Road and then on to Band Stand.
As I approached Carter Road, I saw a number of dim twinkling lights on the promenade. Curious, I quickly took a U turn and parked my car at the promenade.
What I saw brought a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes.
Hundreds of people - young, old, kids, walking in silence with candles in their hands.
I decided to walk amongst them and even without a candle I joined the procession.
It was a candle-lit march in remembrance, in respect and in solidarity.
I don’t know who had organized it, but I later found out that it was posted on Twitter.
We all walked silently, all solemn and some were sobbing.
But what filled my heart with joy and also had me breaking down was that the march stopped at the office of the Additional Commissioner of Police, Western Region Department which is on Carter Road opposite the Railway Guest House.
The entire procession, with their candles, crossed the road and placed hundreds of candles on the wall of the Police Office.
The entire front wall of this Police Station was alit with candles, the common man acknowledging and thanking the cops for protecting our lives and our way of life.
There were some cops that had come out to watch the proceedings.
People went and shook the hands of the cops, some hugged them and some handed them flowers.
What a beautiful, silent, moving and touching way to say THANK YOU to the police personnel of Amchi Mumbai.
I left the house in a blue funk and came back weeping, but this time with hope and gratitude in my heart.
