Far from the maddening crowd.
Although, Bandra is truly the queen of suburbs, its development is accelerating at a speed, where anything to do with the past is getting totally quashed. This makes me sad, but everything is not lost yet. There are still some spots out here where one can actually sit down and be left to one’s own thoughts. Some weeks ago, I found one such spot on a weekend in Bandra. It was shown to me by a friend whose relatives stay around the corner. It easily left an impression on my mind. The four of us walked off from St. Andrews Church. We then passed across some clusters of chawls. This suddenly disappeared and we came across some open space, where there were some local youth playing. A bit of garbage could be seen all around. As we went further, I came across a concrete ramp built by the fisherman out here. It is built at the place, where the land ends, and where the sea water turns up at times.
We encountered one or two drunkards on the ramp, with a bottle in their hands. We didn’t get to hear the normal words of nonstop wisdom which easily flows from any drunkard’s mouth. I guess they too seemed to respect the tranquility of this place. As we walked further, we saw some fishermen loitering around. Finally we too sat down on the ramp. There was only the sea all around and some amount of natural light. I could experience a certain peace, which is very difficult to describe. We spoke for some time but slowly the serenity of the surroundings overtook us and we spent long moments in silence, unwinding from a hectic week and life’s long list of problems. I have been to other places in Bandra like Bandstand or even the Carter Road Promenade. Although we can see the sea from Bandstand or at Carter’s, this experience was quite different from them. Firstly there were no horns blaring around. Secondly there was hardly anyone in the surroundings.
Finally the eerie light just after sunset was truly exceptional. I hope you’ll too get a chance to experience this effect out here.
