Diwali the most awaited festival is also known as Deepavali, the festival of “rows of lights” (Deep = Lamp, Vali =Array). Of all the festivals celebrated in India, Diwali is by far the most glamorous and important. Varying cultures and customs mingle together to make Diwali celebrations very special.

Diwali is celebrated 20 days after Dussehra, on the 13th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashwin (October / November). Enthusiastically enjoyed the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. On Diwali homes are decorated, sweets are distributed by everyone and thousands of lamps are lit. The festival symbolizes unity in diversity as every state celebrates it in its own special way.

Families and friends get together to celebrate Diwali with lights and fireworks and share a bond of closeness. Gifts are exchanged and special dishes are prepared. The celebration Stars with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Duj.

Dhanteras - the first day of Diwali (26^th Oct 2008)

Dhanteras is the beginning of Diwali celebrations. This is an important day for rich business community of western India. Houses and business premises are decorated beautifully.

Narak Chaturdashi/Choti Diwali - the second day (27^th Oct 2008)

On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and made the world free from fear.

Main Diwali - Laxmi Poojan - the third day (28^th Oct 2008)

This is the day to worship Goddess Lakshmi. People believe that Goddess Lakshmi brings the blessings of wealth and prosperity.

Padwa - the Fourth Day (29^th Oct 2008)

In Maharashtra married women perform pooja of their husbands and get expensive gifts in return. Govardhana Puja is also performed in this day.

Bhai Duj - the fifth/last day (30^th Oct 2008)

On this day sisters perform puja for their brothers safety and well-being. Brothers in return give Bhai Dooj Gifts to their sisters as a token of love.
