Please join me and National Congress Party in wishing Mr Asif Bhamla a very Happy Birthday.
“Who is Asif Bhamla?” you may well ask. The truth is, even I don’t know. But driving around Bandra, I have seen a number of hoardings and banners with a big picture of Mr Asif Bhamla and smaller pictures of assorted other people, all of them wishing him a Happy Birthday. The name Robin Gonsalves also appears on the same hoarding at the bottom. Another NCP member, I presume.
This is not the first time I have noticed such hoardings in Bandra. Some time back there were big hoardings put up at various locations wishing Mr Nitish Rane on his birthday. There have been similar announcements for congratulating individuals on numerous achievements like winning elections, becoming General Secretaries, etc. I am sure Bandra is not an anomaly and similar types of hoardings are put up all over the city.
I have nothing against Mr Bhamla or Mr Rane Jr and only wish them the best on their special day. May they have long and successful lives.
But I do object to these public hoardings put up by politicians and their sycophantic followers. Companies pay lakhs of rupees to buy advertising spaces and hoardings. Why should politicians be allowed to boldly break the law and put up such self-serving hoardings for free. I can bet that there is neither any BMC permission being taken before putting these up nor any payment being made.
So, instead of making public announcements on illegal hoardings and marring the beauty of my beautiful Bandra, may I request the well-wishers and followers of our beloved political leaders to pass on their greetings and wishes via bouquets, cards, sms or phone calls….
Or maybe I should also follow suit and put up a permanent hoarding near my house in Bandra. I can use it to wish my daughters, my husband, my dog and my friends on their birthday. Who is to stop me anyway?
