Here are some of the places you will find the most amazing food at very reasonable prices in and around Bandra. So when you feel “inflation hit” and would like to save that extra rupee and still have a memorable meal here is our recommendation list:
1. Aaram Restaurant, Mahim: This old time restaurant opposite St Michaels Church is known for its huge and almost endless servings of Gujarati food. For Rs 150 - 200 per head you can eat to your hearts content and maybe more. I hear the place has been the same for years and the décor is the same too. The vegetables served are fresh and the daal and kadhi are special. Try the bajra rotis, undhyo, khichdi, methi thepla, puran poli and the gulab jamuns. If you go in the mango season you can be treated to some amazing aam ras with puri.
2. Jai Hind Lunch Home, Pali Naka, Bandra: This is my personal favorite for a reasonable and yet amazing coastal food. It is located at the Pali Naka and does not allow much space to stop and park but if you can walk up to this place or call food home from here you are in for a treat the does not pinch the pocket. While the menu would have all sorts of mughlai and veggie items its best avoided and you should stay focused on the coastal food. At almost Rs 200 - 220 per head it’s a bargain. Try the bombil, clams, surmai, sagoti and even the fish in goan rechiado masala. The sukha prawns and prawn curry with rice can be an amazing combination. Phone: 26483381
3. Highway Gomantak, Bandra East: This value for money thali restaurant is another old timer, just off the highway on Bandra East, which has been popular with the coastal sea food lovers of Bandra. With 20 odd versions of the thali which are almost all less than Rs 100 per head makes this place a value topper. Here you will get all the fishy items like prawns, clams, oysters, shark, rawas, surmai, etc. The obviously have the ‘normal’ fish curries and the stuffed pomfrets.
4. Mani Dosa, RamaKrishna Mission Road, Bandra West: Now this place is the really special place in Bandra. He used to be a street side place at the corner of 14th / 15th road in Bandra till cooking was prohibited on roads by BMC some months back. He is now is a small shop at the corner of 16th road and Ramakrishna mission road and remains a popular place for street side dosa lovers. Its best to sit in your car and order the mysore masala dosa, cheese dosa, pav bhaji dosa (yes!!) and some Chinese versions of dosas too. They wont get nominated for any cleanliness awards but when it comes to taste they will be toppers. At Rs 20 - 30 per dosa it’s a great place to eat endlessly without worrying about your wallet.
